Perhaps the answer is in following the God of Jesus: the loving, benevolent, all-embracing principle of Love and Unity, known by Jesus as the "Father." Jesus' Father/Mother God literally dwells in the heart of every person, but is often confused with "Jesus" the literal man. Jesus called himself the "Son of Man" (a human being) and he was called the "Son of God," but he taught that his divinity is also our divinity.
If every "Christian" actually viewed Jesus as "the Way," then each would follow his leadership. To what end was Jesus ministry? Perahps it was, as stated, to bring "glad tidings" to people living in fear and despair. He brought the good news that life is more than what meets the eye, that there is a spiritual dimension where "dust and moth do not corrode and where thieves do not break in and steal," and that it can be on earth as it is in heaven.
He called his followers "the salt of the earth," but if the salt loses its savor (awareness of unity and love), then what else can take its place? Yes, the religion of Jesus has been hijacked by the idolatry of Bible worship. the mystical Jesus likely had no intention of creating a church, an empire, or a hierarchy of "beliefs." Rather, his simple idea was to Love the Source of Life without reservation and regard every person, including yourself, as the very "image" of God.
Yes, I would agree that change is in order; perhaps this kind of focus on God/Spirit is the true meaning of "repent."
