In today's society it is difficult to get away from it. Just watching normal TV we are inundated with sexual images. Watching a show about the 80's on VH-1 we have to watch the pre-commercial "endpiece" about who we'd like to see in a thong. In my studies I have lately been looking at the Shoa, and the related topic of dehumanization, and objectification of human beings by others. I think somehow these two things are related. Also, it's a multi-billion dollar industry ran by adults, with adult-age models, bought by other adults. I think arrested development ties in here somewhere. Adult child issues as well. I wouldn't be surprised if IQ tests were given to the models and we found some level of mild mental retardation in this populaton.
That is not meant to be a cruel insult but a true statement of fact that this is a genuine possibility. Also, drug, alcohol, and other forms of abuse are rampant in this populace, as well a history of sexual and other types of abuse reaching back into early childhood. Low self-esteem, ego maniacal reasoning, and a desire to feel wanted or desired by others. Narcissim too.
Many argue that if they are all willing, then it should be OK, but in light of the potentiality of mental illness and substance abuse among this population in particular, I don't think that's necessarily so. It is a crime against humantiy, really, but since it's freedom of expression, and they are all "consenting adults" it's considered legal in the eyes of the law of this country. You can legally kill yourself slowly with tobacco, alcohol, even prescription drugs, and just plain over-eating and unhealthy lifestyle choices, but intentional immediate suicide is against the rules (not that I'm advocating for that).
I think the "adult industry" falls right in line with that. It's all about the lie. Did you ever notice that the more something is referred to as "adult" the less the people involved act like one? Put on the blinders, and make a fast buck. But you can't take it with you. In fact, it will all rust and be eaten by moths, right? Delusion is a powerful drug in itself. Facing reality is a real pain.
"Adult" is a euphimistic way of saying, "Things we'd be in trouble for, or embarrased or ashamed of for openly sharing with children." At what point do we decide as a society that a person is old enough to objectify another, and to allow them selves to be used for that purpose? If we shouldn't be exposed to these things as children, then what makes it OK later? I don't have the answers, but those are my questions anyways...
