Jay Leno's comic "Jaywalking" segment shows how people can be so influenced by the corporate culture that they lose track of reality. "Q-Who was George Washington? A- The guy on a dollar bill?" It's all just for laughs, and nothing really matters. Unfortunately, industrial factories geared for executives, profit, and investor shareholders externalize as many social and environmental costs as they can, and thus are not making the world cleaner or more peaceful. The IPCC, 2005 Millenium Ecosystem Assessment, Millenium Development Goals, and UNEP confirm what many NGO's have been protesting for years. Moreover, the U.S. Bush/Cheney Administration propaganda around wmd's in Iraq reflects their power base in the circles of multinational corporations. Whatever faults they have on their own, Multinational Corporations are making things far worse. All this from a Corporate Consumer ideology derived from a perfectly fine religious origin. In fact, I have come to understand that the fundamental negligence is that Capitalism is an extremist form of Christianity. St. Thomas Aquinas applied Aristotle's Greek logic, and then the illustrious DesCartes and Newton removed God, and Christ, from the picture. The picture starts to get a lot clearer from that perspective.
My lifelong interest in holistic spirituality has brought my practice together with my politics and lifestyle. Give me Michael Moore, Ralph Nader, Al Gore, and Ted Turner. Give me Cesar Chavez, Paulo Freire, and Gloria Steinem. Greenpeace, Amnesty International, and Oxfam. Give me Green Cooperative businesses like Coop in Switzerland, Planet Organic in London, Alnatura in Germany for starters. Actually, I don't think the latter two are cooperatives. Oh, there's more. These are all just oeur doerves- check that spelling.... Most importantly, I went to my Dad's home country and through my spiritual path from aetheism to Taoism to the Twelve Steps to Buddhism to Christianity, and more, I've met my favorite girl in the whole world.
Good, now I'm not jealous of Joel Osteen and Victoria, or Al and Tipper, and thinking I'm going to end up celibate like Ralph, God bless him. Anyway, may the Four Noble Truths and the realization that "Western Civilization" is actually Christian in nature help us. Greco-Roman, Judeo-Christian. Democracy is originally Christian, though its true nature is only revealed through its multiplicity of influences. That is God for you. True Christianity that can then be informed by inter-faith perspectives and Science. It can then, however, return "Secular" society to its spiritual foundations, and then serve to help free us from the scourge of "Profit maximization" and "Absentee Shareholder Value". All hail the Almighty Dollar, if you don't value the survival of life on this planet. I hope that works for you and the World Council of Churches, or the UNEP Interfaith Partnership on the Environment. Om Shanti and God Bless Christian Science and Unitarian Universalism. Tchau for now.
