Some friends of mine used to visit a Quakers church on a regular basis--mostly as onloookers, not because they wanted to be members. How do Quaker churches normally handle people who come as first-time visitors?

I've been told by a Quaker friend of mine that visitors are always welcome. I plan to attend a Meeting soon, myself. I have been to one of their social events, and all the members were cordial and welcoming to me.

Quaker meetings will always welcome visitors - whether it is the first visit, the second visit, the third visit, ...

When you feel comfortable with the meeting, you can approach the members about joining.

You should be aware that there are different types of Quaker meetings representing different strains of Quakerdom: programmed vs. unprogrammed, silent worship vs. vocal ministry, orthodox vs. liberal, ministered vs. non-ministered, FGC (Friends General Conference) vs. FUM (Friends United Meeting), or Conservative, or Independent.

Many of these dichotomies will overlap within meetings. One source to find meetings is quakerfinder.org. Once you input a city or zip code, this website will find the nearest meetings by distance - out to about 80 miles. It will also identify the type of meetings - although programmed meetings or FUM affiliated meetings are not included. These meetings can be found on the FUM webpage.

Good luck with finding the right meeting for you.

One note: all Quakers - of whatever stripe - are Friends!

I just found a posting by QuakerJohn that listed another source to find Quaker meetings. This is www.fwccdirectory.org/. This is an even better source than the site I listed before, quakerfinder.org, because it finds all Quaker meetings whether or not they are affiliated. The quakerfinder.org site does not return FUM, EFI, or unaffiliated meetings.
