Lazy day

    Tuesday, December 22, 2009, 10:44 AM [General]

We haven't been having our regular basic Judaism class at the temple because of board meetings, so I'm just reading as muchas I can of the book the Rabbi told me to get and studying some work by Rabbi Joseph Telushkin.

I guess this will be my last Christmas.  We wrapped presents yesterday and thankfully we are done with our shopping.  Putting up the tree today.

Thankful thaat I don't have to go back to work until Jan. 4!

    Beginning my conversion

    Saturday, December 5, 2009, 2:19 PM [General]

This week I met with our local Reform Jewish Rabbi about conversion and it was a wonderful conversation!  I also started taking basic Judaism classes once a week at the temple.  I'm on my way to conversion!

    Nothing to Do

    Friday, November 13, 2009, 8:51 PM [General]

It feels so good to have nothing to do.  I just bought a book on yoga I'm going to look over, then do some meditation and read.  I love not being in school!

    Big Decision

    Thursday, November 12, 2009, 2:33 PM [General]

I made a big decision yesterday.  I dropped my class that was one of my prerequisites for the PhD program I was applying to.  I immersed myself so deeply in the school work that I was neglegcting my job, so I'm going to direct that energy into work.  We do good things that help people, so it's worth it.  It's also more important to me to convert to Reform Judaism than to get a PhD, so I'm going to direct my energy into that as well.  I need to take care of myself and I wasn't when I was balancing work and school.  It's disappointing because I was making an A and had just finished what I thought was a really good 35 page paper.

Too much to Do and Not Enough Time to Do It All

    Tuesday, October 13, 2009, 12:57 PM [General]

I'm at home on my lunch break; it's raining and cold outside and that puts me in a bad mood.  I have lots of editing to to on a methadone paper when I get back to work, but I want to sneak in some time with my Torah readings and commentary.  That and I have a book to finish for school and a paper to edit and make a reference list.  Too much!  How to know which to do first, and if I even get a chance for a second!

    Some relaxation

    Tuesday, October 6, 2009, 3:20 PM [General]

With two big IRB trainings coming up Thursday and Friday (one lasting all day - ugh), my boss told me I could work from home tomorrow instead of Friday.  I just hope I don't fall asleep at 6 and miss class!  I don't have much actual work to do, so I'll either start reading the latest book for class next week, work on my paper, make some flashcards for the final, or do a little of everything.

Or I could go in a different direction and read my conversion book along with my daily Jewish ethics readings, start the Torah with the commentary book I purchased yesterday, and spend a lot of time meditating.

Either way, it will all be good for me.

    Great Lunch

    Thursday, October 1, 2009, 2:36 PM [General]

I had a very interesting conversation with my police officer husband about him applying for the FBI or DEA and me converting to Reform Judaism.  All was agreed upon.  The only problem would be that he would be in D.C. training for 6 months, but that might give me time to study.  You never know.

I work full time at a very stressful job in psychiatric research, am on a track for applying to a PhD program, and thinking of converting.  My beloved grandma would tell me, "Don't go at it like yer killin' rats!"

No more writing for a week (unless work calls for it)

    Wednesday, September 30, 2009, 4:13 PM [General]

I've been writing like a maniac for the past few weeks for my Juvenile Delinquency Problems class.  The paper outline with references is due tonight, so, being stupid, I decided to finish the whole paper before writing my outline.  It's not even due until Thanksgiving!  I do have quite a bit to revise, tho'; I've never used the Chicago Style Manual before and we have to put the PAGE NUMBER in every parenthetical citation (I did not do this or keep these numbers).  So it's a good thing I finished early.

I need to get my mind off juveniles and meth and think about something else.  We start a new book after tonight; it's in my backpack but I haven't even looked at it.  I'm keeping up with my reading of Jewish ethics (which is easy because I enjoy it so much) but I've also added some material about conversion to Reform Judaism.  I bought a tiny copy of The Torah this afternoon at lunch; I'll add small bits to my reading sessions.  I've also been so tired from writing that I'm skipping my meditation sessions (not good; this is keeping my anxiety under control).  My mind needs to relax just so I can write, if nothing else.
