Being openly pagan - what does that entail? This group is to share experiences, tips and discussion about being "out of the broom closet." Dealing with family, friends, work, and general reaction - share it here!

We also welcome folks who are still private about their pagan beliefs, but would like to talk about their eventual move forward. -- Group guidelines are posted in the group's Journal section.

Merry Meet, all! I am definitely out of the broom closet, lol. I am an author of Wiccan children's workbooks and also a Pagan journalist. You can read my bio to find out more, if interested; I don't want to post links unless asked. Hello to everyone and a magickal Samhain season as well.

    More for Laura :-)

I agree with YamzTamz's comments...but I wanted to emphasize the part about not needing others to necessarily APPROVE of your choice. If you understand what you believe and you can discuss it with others in a civil manner, it really shouldn't matter whether they approve. The worst issues I have seen came from folks who had intolerant or extremist Christian supervisors. Be careful to document problems and seek the support and advice of others in minority faiths to help navigate your particular minefield. I am glad you are able to come out of the 'broom closet' and wish you the best!

    For Laura the "new" Pagan

I say depending on your community you should be very open with your faith. You need to let those whom you care for, that are conservative in religious thought, know gently. When it comes up you need to not avoid it or say nothing. You need to state it simply. I.E. I actually believe in a different idea of god. My faith is somewhat different. I have come to believe in another view of god etc...this will raise eyebrows and questions which you need to be ready for. Know where you stand and don't back down. Also being strong can turn into being argumentative. Do not argue your faith. Faith is not arguable. Faith is a personal choice and right. You must stay positive and if things get to heated on either side step away. Let it rest...there is and needs to be time. My mother still doesn't comprehend exactly what I believe and I don't need her to. She merely needs to know and respect my choice. As I respect her. Who knows some family will surprise you with their acceptance and love. I found that my Jewish sister already had pagan friends I didn't even know about(we are about 14 yrs. apart). I also had a very christian aunt send me a cute amber necklace for ritual jewelry. Give people the chance to surprise you. And learn to deal with those who have a hard time with it. If they love you they will come around in time. Remember there is an unspoken burden to educate those who are willing to learn so be there when those you love ask questions and don't fear the outcome. Good luck and blessed be!
