About Me
I am the director of United Ministries at Black Hills State University. We are an ecumenical program that helps students develop their faith and serve God on a basically secular campus. We are bridge builders, connecting students to one another, to God, the community, and their faith tradition. It is sometimes difficult to encourage faithfulness in a society that values self-righteousness more, but I believe that it is the only way to find God and fulfillment in our lives, so I keep plugging along.
I love beliefnet's ecumenical and objective style. Too often, faith websites focus on indoctrination and then fall into the trap of idolatry. By that I mean, they place themselves in God's place and worship their own creation of culturally based ideas and doctrines. Radical monotheism, a la Niebuhr, does not mean placing your own cultural values and assumptions above all others, but recognizing that your worldview is less than God's worldview and to constantly strive for the higher understanding, frequently by listening to the other totally unlike or even opposed to ourselves. It is a difficult concept for people to learn and accept. Many of the radical religious divisions that we have come to believe are inevitable and unconquerable would simply melt away like fog, if we learned this basic truth.
