About Me
I'm into comparative mythology research and I follow a lot of modern biblical criticism oriented material as well. Joseph Campbell's work is appealing to me, so I started up a discussion group to kick around a few ideas and go over some suggestions that he had put out there towards religious reform here in the west:
"Everything mythology, every religion, every God, is true in this sense, true as metaphorical of the human and cosmic mystery" (Joseph Campbell)
The mystery here is referring to the "mystery of existence". The truth is that existence actually is a great big mystery in that we have no idea why it exists in the first place, it just exists, it's just there. The Gods of mythology and the later religions traditions that have been based on ancient mythology are representing the sheer mystery factor involved in life and existence and that's essentially the truth lying around at the bottom of these stories.
I've taken on a Pantheistic approach in life, one of understanding the nature of mythology and religion as not being literal/historical, but rather one of accepting the metaphorical value of the myths. I started up a World Pantheist Movement group where there's some extensive information about what Pantheism is and what it entails if anyone around here wants to browse through.

Hi! - June 23, 2008 - 04:47 PM
Thanks for welcoming me as a friend here! I'm a fan of Joseph Campbell as well- there was a DVD series on the new release shelf at our video store this winter of his lectures hosted by Susan Sarandon. The lectures were awesome and were a nice change from the old Bill Moyers interviews. Anyways... what is the name of your Joe Campbell discussion group; can you send me an invitation? Thanks! I'm inviting you to Being Ourself, a peer discussion group for folks who feel like reality is one whole interacting with itself (or Ourself)! Peace, Ty
