About Me
Sonshine Community Ministries will be a place of HOPE for the hurting and poor of McKeesport. We will show them JESUS. www.sonshinecommunityministries.org
The Sonshine Kitchen was started by the members of Concordia Lutheran Church in McKeesport. Pa. in 1983 in response to collapse of the steel mill industry. Thousands of people over the years were helped each Monday with a hot meal, free clothing and food bags. I started volunteering in 92 and grew to love the ministry and the people who came through our doors.Unfortunately, the church was a smaller older congregation. I became the first woman president and had to help make the sad decision to close the church. January 7, 2001 was our last worship service and January 8, 2001 was the new beginning of the Sonshine Kitchen. All the members of the congregation moved on to other churches, but gave me a 6 month trial period to stay in the building to try to continue on with this ministry. I also thought that I'd be there for only 6 months. I at least wanted to find new places for the people who came through our doors. God had other plans. I am still in awe that we are going on our 8th year since the church closed down. It has not always been an easy journey. For many years I have worn many hats. My husband tells everyone that I am a CEO and I laugh. I said yes I am, but it is a soupkitchen :) I am CEO/ Exec Director/Secretary/Janitor(alot of the times) Miss Barb and so on.That is all changing now for the better. God has sent many wonderful people our way to not only continue this ministry, but to grow it!! Each Monday from 1-3pm we have an Adult Literacy Program. Following at 3:30, we have an informal church service(Not Mandatory but attended well. The people know that this is THEIR church now) Then from 4:15to 5:30 we offer a hot meal and free clothing. We also distribute food bags the second Monday in the am each month. Each Tuesday during the school year we have an afterschool tutoring program" Hang 5" for kids in grades 1-6. HS Kids who belong to First Free church in McKeesport are the tutors to these kids and it is so awesome to see how the relationships have grown. We also have started a 12 step Recovery Support Group that meets each Tuesday evening from 7:30-8:30pm.A men's Bible Study also now meets on Saturdays. This ministry is not mine. It belongs to ALL who come through our doors. Volunteers and recipients alike. We even have some recipients that have become volunteers! There are still many great things to come and I am so blessed by God that He let me be a part of all of this. PLEASE MY FRIENDS.. CONTINUE TO PRAY FOR US
