My favorite philosopher was a Greek who was active around 500 BCE. His name was Heraclitus. He wrote beautiful, poetic oracles. His philosophy is often called "universal flux." He used a river and "everliving fire" as images of change in his work. He is best known for this oracle:

"Into the same river you could not step twice, for other and still other waters are flowing."

My personal favorite is this one:

"This Cosmos, the same for all, no god nor man did create, but it ever was and is and will be, everliving fire, kindling in measures and being quenched in measures."
