About Me
My name is Donald Whipple Fox. I am an enrolled member of the Santee Sioux Nation (now based near Niobrara, Nebraska on the Missouri River. My great-great-great-great grandfather was Chief Hushasha (Red Legs) of the Wahpekute Dakota who resided in the New Ulm area. I received the name Hushasha from my family and tribe in 2006. Hushasha converted to Christianity and is understood to have been baptized by the Rt. Rev. Henry Benjamin Whipple, the first Episcopal bishop of Minnesota, sometime before 1862. Many, if not the majority, of Hushasha's descendants have identified themselves as Episcopalians. Since 2001, I have been working as Executive Director for the Indigenous Theological Training Institute of North America, Inc. (ITTI). Part of my work with this non-profit organization which has roots in the Episcopal/Anglican tradition is to assist in the unique, theological expressions of Native Americans and First Nations peoples. Many indigenous peoples have been the objects of European cultural and religious colonialism. ITTI works in raising up indigenous leadership in the Church and in communities that address the specific ways in which Native Americans and First Nations people live into their understandings of traditional, indigenous spirituality in a Christian context. I am always interested in meeting people who are willing to explore and support this work.
