About Me:
I'm a pagan. I use this term generically because I do not belong to any neo-pagan or reconstructionist group. To me, paganism is spirituality and a life philosophy. It is earth-centered, with the central idea being that we are a part of our environment and our environment is what gives us the gifts and joys of life: water, sunshine, air to breathe, etc. Beyond these bare necessities for life that the earth gives us we also have lakes and rivers and oceans to swim in, forests to camp in or live in, trees to give us shelter from the heat and provide oxygen, etc. etc. etc. Basically I think the earth gives us all the good we have in life and that if anything is deserving of respect, prayer, or praise, it is our planet itself.
More philosophically I believe an earth-centered spirituality means taking care of our environment is a top priority and living close to the earth is an ideal to strive for. That being said, I don't currently live very close to the earth at all. I live in an apartment in a large city. But my paganism urges me to seek life closer to the earth. As a young person I am still figuring out my own preferences in life and after living in a city I can see that it is not the ideal place for me. The opportunity is great, the opportunity to make friends, to get jobs, to gain an education are all wonderful. But to me cities seem to be a desert, a harsh place with too much clutter and not enough nature. It also seems very easy to forget about how important nature is when living in a city.
I believe that in its essence, everything is natural, from computer chips to laser beams, because everything we have, no matter how manipulated from it's natural form, comes from our environment. Therefore I am not against modern technology and do not seek to reconstruct or build a farming or subsistence lifestyle. In my ideal world we would live in smaller communities in natural settings, but with all the conveniences that modern life and science have given us. I am an idealist in that I think about my ideal world, but I am a realist in that I don't seek to change the world at large. I simply believe in striving to create my own ideal world for me, within the context of our modern world. I'm in college now, and still figuring out my plans for how I wish to live my life after graduation.
On this website I love how people come together to respectfully explore beliefs and ideas. I love how it is both a community site where people can form communities of similar beliefs, but also a place of community where people of different beliefs can come together and talk about the different perspectives their respective beliefs give them in regard to questions and issues that face us all. I hope to be able to share my opinion on issues and to learn from others. I hope that I can make friends of similar belief, as I do not know anyone personally with similar beliefs as mine, but also friends of all beliefs.
