My way of looking at it - although your, "what is marketed best", is an interesting point, lol - we are all different in our experience of our own lives and what appeals to one turns another off. Even so we are one in our humanity and in being created in the likeness of our Creator. It does not matter who is right or who is wrong - relationship with the Divine is not about being religious or belonging to a certain sect or the ego trip of seeing ourselves in the "right" group.
