About Me
Thank you for visiting my Beliefnet profile. You can see my photo in the "photos" section of this profile. If it has to do with mysticism, monasticism or contemplative living, I'm on it. Prayer, meditation, chanting, sacred song, worship.... I'm there too. Multi-faith is a great fit for me as well.
As to whether I'm a traditionalist or a progressive, a conservative or a radical in religious and spiritual matters, the answer is: all of the above. Many years ago I attended the first International Conference on Gregorian Chant one weekend and an all-day workshop hosted by the rather radical Women's Alliance for Theology, Ethics and Ritual the following weekend and had a thrilling time at both gatherings.
My favorite sacred text is: poetry. But I also find joy, wisdom and comfort in the Bible (which contains great poetry) and sacred texts from major world religiions. I'm utterly addicted to reading and writing. I mostly read non-fiction that relates to religion or spiirituality. I also love to read magazines. Spirituality & Health, Sacred Journey (published by the International Fellowship of Prayer), Science of Mind (New Thought) Spiritual Life (Carmelite mystics and spirituality), Psychology Today, Nexus, Kosmos, Enlightenment.
In January 2008 I launched the Mystical Order of the White Rose, a Monastic Cyber-Community for Mystics. It provides inspiration, information and devotional resources for people interested in--or actively involved with--traditional and/or new (post-modern) expressions of mysticism, monasticism and contemplative living.
Our monthly free e-newsletter provides inspiration and information about traditional and alternative ways of living mystically and monastically in the 21st century. The newsletters include interviews with and articles about mystics, artists, healers and visionaries; cool links, and daily multi-faith, multi-media devotionals.
Our unique daily devotional resources, which include some combination of quotations, poetry, images, audio files, videos, and multiple relevant web-links, have been described as “engagingly eclectic and highly ecumenical” as well as “absorbing, inspiring, addictive and educational.”
You can subscribe here. You can read past issues here.
Here are some comments from members of the Mystical Order of the White Rose that might give you a better sense of what it offers members:
“I feel that I have found a sanctuary of sorts with the Mystical Order of the White Rose community. While it honors and shares wisdom teachings from many religious and spiritual traditions, it’s perfectly okay that I don’t have one particular religious or spiritual box that I fit neatly into. It’s rare and refreshing to connect with a spiritual community that doesn’t want or expect me to adopt a certain spiritual identity or way of thinking and doing things. The focus is more on universals–like prayer, meditation, mindfulness, kindness, inner peace and service–rather than particulars. Those are left to the individual.” - Cliff Biel
“A cyber-monastery is a weird concept in a way, but it’s cool too. And I like the White Rose symbol. It gets past the whole God, Goddess, Jesus, Buddha thing. You could be a total agnostic or a Jedi Knight and yet still be a true monk and spiritual warrior in the Mystical Order of the White Rose.” - D.W.S.
