Some points of my biography that might be worth knowing:
I am an atheist. My parents are atheists. My father's parents were atheists. And my grandmother's father was an atheist (he's the one who started it).
On the other hand, my mother's parents were Christian Scientists, and my father's sister converted to Islam.
My dad's a physicist and my mom's an actress (both retired but still puttering around in their fields).
I'm a computer scientist, currently working in the field of machine learning, which I view as automated philosophy of science. Before getting into machine learning, I mostly worked on digital watermarking (which I don't view as having any philosophical implications, really).
My career started in the early 80's at AT&T Bell Labs, writing software for Arno Penzias and Bob Wilson, the guys who measured the background radiation predicted by the Big Bang theory.
I spent most of the 90's living and working in Prague, Czechoslovakia (one country at the time) and Vilnius, Lithuania.
I came back from Lithuania with a wife who kicks butt, and I now have two frighteningly beautiful daughters.
In April 2007, I was daignosed with stage 4 lung cancer. Metastases to my ribs, spine, and left retina. So far, however, things have gone far better than could be expected.
Hi Matt, it's good to "see" you again. I wanted to tell you that when I saw one of your rare posts, but since it was in the middle of a thread after Bill told us about the death of his sister, I didn't feel it appropriate to clog up that thread with my sentiment. I hope all is well with you, how is your new therapy affecting you?
Matt,
Your posts are so inspirational. I'm looking forward to the chance to get to know you better. I don't pray either, but you and your family are in my thoughts.
Take care,
Dena
