Last night, many of the so called "elites" of media, politics, hollywood and advertisement met, for its yearly dinner. The program started out with J.Carney telling the audiance that the Presidents mike was "hot" or live, and that someone should turn it off. We then hear the Pres. in the background, as if he is talking to himself. He talks about his greying hair, having to be there without a teller prompter etc. Then when its time for him to come on stage, you hear a toilet flush, and him bemoaning the fact that he wished he had a cigarette.
Maybe its me, but somehow I expect a certain sense of dignity regarding the position of Americas President. A modicum of respect, that one would afford a person whose position, deserves some respect. I can only suppose, its my sense of the sacred, that makes me believe somethings should be held on a higher ground. I can only suppose, its what I have seen as severly lacking in our culture..the lack of culture, itself!
I have some friends, who have phones installed in their bathrooms? What call would be that important, that it cant wait? But its not for that , that I would never have a phone in my bathroom, again, its like asking someone in to talk with you while you deficate? A little too familar for my taste! And speaking of taste, these folks were invited to dinner! Funny, the first time we heard the toilet flush on" All in the Family" Not so much when your just about to sit down to dinner with the Pres?
To me, its all about respect. I believe bathrooms have a purpose, and that they should never be the appetizer at a formal dinner. Guess its just me? Guess I respect my guests to much for that kind of childish humor, forget the humor, we're talking about a position that from my point of view, should demand more respect. I wouldnt have minded as much, if it was Jimmy Kimmels voice coming from the WC. But whose the slob who asked the Pres to do that shtick? And why didnt he find something wrong about doing it?
For me, his lack of class was first obvious with the gift he gave to the Queen of England. The next was the past three years of put downs any chance he gets. So I call only suppose, the sound of flushing a toilet as the intro to this "elite" dinner, was something we should have grown accustomed to , as just another example of his lack of class.
My problem is that I always have Christs presence with me. And maybe its because of that, I find so much of our cultures behavior, childish and at times really offensive. Offensive in that its more a lack of forethought of respect. In this case, I felt it was beneth the office of President, to make ones opinig remarks a toilet thing? I guess again, my sense of humor doesnt need the help of a lavatory or a body part, for it to be funny, so I must be a majority of one?
If not my position as President was enough not to go along with that, than it would be the respect I would have for my audience. However, our Pres didnt see the FLUSH as a problem, guess he wouldnt if he thought himself having a ROYAL Flush? But that in itself, is the problem. That would make me understand why the Dems so easily embraced the occupiers. People who saw nothing wrong with defecating on anothers property.
Am I making too much of his blatant lack of class? "Class" maybe the very reason why he touts it in his separation of the rich and the poor? He may inwardly dislike people who inherrently have a sense of dignity, and he may see that as given them because they were rich? Who knows, all I know is that he has none! Yet , neither do those in the media, who seem to be able to laugh only when the joke, isnt on them!
We have de-cultured our society. What used to be understood as having a place of honor, was the position of the President of the United States. Clinton destroyed the Oval office, by making it his own private motel 6. Now we have another President who seems no problem with a bathroom joke, at his expense? Hows that for your appetizer?
I believe we see God, in what we hold sacred. And as more and more of those symbols, are being torn down, debuncked or dismissed; we also will find fewer places in which what is Sacred , can be allowed to exist!
When a society chooses to eliminate what used to be held as sacred, and in its place, chooses a lesser sense of itself, it is indeed no longer a nation to be honored. For it has lost the very essence of what is honorable in itself! When you respect yourself as if Christ were with you, you tend to respect those who you have been chosen to serve. When you honor the Presidentcy more than yourself, you understand what the word dignity means. If you get that place of respect, but treat it with less respect than the postion deserves, than its only arrogance that got you there, and arrogance doesnt know the word respect!
We are witinessing something because the veil has been lifted. We can now see what politics has become. A system corrupted by self interest. A not so new deadly sin.. "Politics without Principle". It purpose is self interest. Politics becomes more the objective, than instituting what would be best for the public good. Lies are promoted as truths. Self agrandizement, replaces self respect.
We have become a culture of "nothing matters". That there are no rules man must follow. That everyman holds his own truth, as if it were the absolute. Even when that truth ignores ones highest good. When religious symbols are removed, and seen as being offensive. While defecating on police cars is praised , as freedom of speach. Why should we be concerned with Americas ideal of a "City on the hill" being tarnished? When anything that once was sacred, is no longer emmulated as a goal we should reach.
"Cool" always captures the eyes of a people who idolize the foutain of youth. "Cool" and "hip" always relaces the confines of respect, honor and truth. Respect, honor and truth, are the virtures of heaven, rarely are they the motivators of those left on the earth.
Why should I be saddened by how low American culture has fallen? Even our AAA rating now matches the lesser people we have become.
Maybe its because I have seen a better America? One where principles and virtues are the core of its Soul? Maybe I honor more ones Self Respect, than being down and dirty with the " hip" and the"cool?" Maybe its because I believe there comes a time, when we are supposed to put away childish things? Maybe if it were Jimmy Kimmels voice I heard as the toilet flushed, I would have felt better? After all, he's supposed to be the comic relief. Instead, it was my President being "cool". A product of our culture. Whats wrong with a little bathroom humor? The question should have been, why would we have to sink that low for a laugh?
Why didnt he see he lowered the position of President? A position that is usually afforded a sense of dignity and respect? Maybe its because of todays culture? Who know little about the values of self respect? Maybe he believes he's above the Presidentcy? Maybe when a person is filled by the egos arrogance, there is no boundary they cant cross? Maybe its when someone holds themself higher than the office they occupy?. That you see nothing wrong in flushing the toilet alongside your opening remarks? Maybe being in the crapper with those who believe themselves to be the "elite", is the joke? Guess they have become the butt of their own joke! The joke is on those who believe in their own self importance. Guess thats the culture they keep!
