I was born in March 1978 in Parshat Vayikra, at least 150 years too late. I'm a stereotypical Pisces Horse, not that I put much stock in Astrology. I am currently single and have no biological children of my own. The one pictured is a friend's two year old who has adopted me as her "Daddy!!!
". Older ones will ask the heart-wrenching question "Will you be my daddy?
"
I am of Austrian/Mennonite/English heritage and was raised in Pentacostal/Evangelical Christian circles but have become enlightened to the Truth of Torah. I do not identify as a "Christian" nor am I a "Jewish convert". I see Judaism as a light to the Nations, presupposing the existance of separate National Identities, and so I reserve the right to retain my National Identity and celebrate our differences by insuring this identity in my progeny. I don't put much stock in the whole "Noahide" concept though.
I think the Talmud is good for beginners like me to help understand cultural aspects and interpretations of Torah, though certainly not on par with His Word. I think the worst thing about Western European/American Culture, in a religious context, is that it confuses The Bible with Modern Christianity and Torah as somehow synonymous with the barbarisms of Sharia represented by media imagry of "fundamentalist Islam". (I'm no expert on Sharia, which is why I heavily qualify this statement)
My God isn't an oppressive misogynist as misinterpreted by feminist wymyn.
I did some time with Messianics; they gave me a great introduction to Hebrew Liturgy and other customs. I'm not currently affiliated with a Synagogue/Shul, which is my main reason for joining here; to try to meet members similar to me. My current resources are the Tanach, Rashi on Torah, and the Prophets (Joshua-Samuel) from Art Scroll, and internet references.
I also use Christian writing for reference. While I appreciate the research, I clearly don't always come to the same conclusions. I believe the best way to find truth is through the honest and open-minded study of contrarian opinions. They're often not accurate due to ignoring cultural and linguistic context, making it essentially propaganda. At other times they serve to offer non-"fundamentally" relevant corrections. Then there was this one time I decided to shift fully out of Christianity. The theory ought to change with the evidence anyway.
I do not identify as either a "liberal" or "conservative" but more along the lines of "libertarian" which I view as more consistant with Torah. I despise liberals for their unwillingness, or is it inability, to use logic in debate, who must continually "hock mir en chinik" and resort to ad hominem attacks and other logical fallacies. All I can say to that is "Fardrai zich deyn kopf!"
Conservatives tend to be a bunch of blind, legalistic Xtians leading other blind, legalistic Xtians. [By legalism I refer to their following of "doctrines of man" rather than the perfect Torah of HaShem. They redefine the term in reverse.] Worse, they think Steven Harper and George Bush are people worthy of following with their..."conservative" policies and legislation.
There are some liberals who consider my opinions a shondah (shame). Well, there are many who consider the Word of HaShem a shondah, which I obviously disagree on, so it comes as no surprise I would disagree with yet another liberal's subjective definition of "shondah" without it being backed by Torah. I don't consider being called this offensive unto itself; just a symptom of the speaker's ignorance.
I am NOT a pacifist. The logical extention of Peace is Death. I have no use for the Death Cult of Pacifism. Life can only exist through struggle. I also served as a Combat Engineer for about 6 years. Please don't confuse that with patriotism.
I'm open to learn new things, but, as George Orwell said, "What can you do against the lunatic who is more intelligent than yourself, who gives your arguments a fair hearing and then simply persists in his lunacy?"
Some quotes I like by George Bernard Shaw:
"The reasonable man adapts himself to the conditions that surround him... The unreasonable man adapts surrounding conditions to himself... All progress depends on the unreasonable man."
Also:
You see things; and you say, "Why?" But I dream things that never were; and I say, "Why not?"
ברוך אתה יהוה אלי מלך העולם המלמד ידי לקרב אצבעותי למלחמה
Blessed are You, Adonai my God, King of the Universe, who trains my hands for battle and my fingers for war.
זה אלי - יהוה איש מלחמה - יהוה שמו
This is my God; Adonai is a "Man of war", Adonai is His name.
מי-כמכה באלם יהוה מי-כמכה נאדר בקדש נורא תהלת עשה פלא
Who is like You among the heavenly powers Adonai? Who is like You? Mighty in holiness, too awsome for praise, doer of wonders!
Shalom Jon. You wanted to ask me something back in July about something I'd posted! I am SO sorry that I missed your comment! If you still remember what you wanted to ask me, please ask! I'll check back soon. :-) Sorry again! (Shabbat Shalom)
