I stayed in New Orleans to be with my elderly father in his retirement home during hurricane Katrina at the request of the director.  After the storm devastated our city, it was my task to get my father out along with my two lab/chow mix 6-year-old dogs.  The plan was to drive to Boca Raton Florida, where my brother could get my father situated in another retirement home.  I then had to drive to Tennessee to stay witih my sister for a while until I could get my own place.  I have a Honda Civic.  I put Binx and Diamond in the back and off we went.  We drove a total of 3000 miles!!  I could not have asked for better driving companions.  They enjoyed seeing the sights and every time we stopped, several times a day, they loved their walks in different places, exploring the new smells and terrain.  One night I was so tired, I decided to sleep in a rest stop.  I propped my head on a pillow lodged against the side of car and slept in the front seat.  I had the window open and notified the guard that I would be resting.  Binx stood and alternately sat next to me with his busy little head ready for anything.  I have no doubt that the great escape from New Orleans after that terrible storm was made easier and even more fun due to the company of my pets.  They also loved exporing each new dog-friendly motel room along the way.  Animals are indeed God's angels.
