Salaam to all my Muslimah sisters in Islam and peace to the rest of the world community. I truly believe we can get along. I have yet to find a religion that does not stress the same basic ideals, namely being kind, being helpul, and avoiding harm to yourself and others.
Obviously I have my religion and I think it's right. There are things I don't agree with in other religions and that's just how it's going to be. This does not mean I don't want to learn about other people, it does not mean I don't find other beliefs interesting, and it does not mean it's ok to treat anyone badly because of what they believe. This is a new era in time, and the world is rapidly becoming a global community. Insh'allah tolerance and peace must be cultivated.
I'm a college student, I'm dirt poor, I live in the States and I lead a pretty normal life even though I'm a religious monority. Someday I'll get a fancy degree insh'allah and a great husband.
I visit the local Zen center (always in full Islamic dress so as not to give any false impressions -- I am a Muslimah first and foremost no matter where I go.) I find the Zen approach to meditation similar to what our Sufi brothers and sisters have done for hundreds of years to clear their mind in preparation for prayer. There are concepts in Zen Buddhism that prevent me from ever calling myself a "Buddhist" but learning to detach from self-centeredness through quiet meditation has helped me become closer to God. And Allah knows best.
