A blade-wielding man killed one and injured two in an attack at a school in Sweden.

Seems like no matter where you are in the world, schools just aren't safe anymore.

It is both sad and tragic. The differnce is that an assailant can do far less damage with a knife than he can with a semi-automatic rifle.

I think the death toll is up to 3 now. One teacher, one student, and the masked man. If this happened in the US the guy would have had several guns, lots of clips, and many more dead.

That's a good example of confirmation bias. There are over 96 million schools around the world. A tiny percentage have been attacked. Looking at the whole picture; schools are very safe.

Yes, the death toll is 3, including the attacker who died at a hospital after being shot once by police.  The 2 other dead are a teacher and a student.

Police are investigating.  The attacker's identity has not yet been disclosed.  As to motive, a police investigator told reporters that a racist motive was "part of the picture."  He did not elaborate.

"This is a black day for Sweden," Prime Minister Stefan Lofven said of the attack, the deadliest ever to target a school in Sweden.  "It is a tragedy that hits the entire country."  Lofven dropped his schedule for the day and went to Trollhättan, the city in western Sweden where the school is located.

King Carl XVI Gustaf said the entire nation was "in shock" and that the royal family received the news "with great dismay and sadness."

I've been reading Swedish detective stories these past few years, and the world they portray is dark and heavy with the fear of hidden social pathology.

“So long as there is squalor in the world, those obsessed with social justice feel obliged not only to live in it themselves but also to spread it evenly.”

Maybe in your private little world, but out here in the real world the vast majority of people are not violent. They're just trying to fumble through life like the rest of us. Only a tiny minority resort to violence.

Swedish police have labeled the attack a hate crime based on discoveries they made when searching the man’s home, the way he dressed, his behavior at the scene, and the way he selected his victims.

Tröllhattan has a large immigrant population among its 56,000 people and most students at Kronan school, where the attack took place, are foreign-born.

“All together, this gives a picture that the perpetrator had a racist motive when he committed the crimes at Kronan school,” police said in a statement.  “His way of marching points to Nazism.”

Police have not identified the attacker, a local man who died in the hospital of his gunshot wound later Thursday.

Senior police officer Niclas Hallgren told a news conference that surveillance videos showed him roaming with a sword and a sharp knife Thursday morning inside the school.  On the video, police noticed how he “selects his victims.  And those with dark skin were attacked,” investigator Thord Haraldsson told reporters.  “The victims were dark-skinned.”

Evidence appears to show that he acted alone, Haraldsson said, adding that police found “a kind of suicide note” in his apartment.  In it, the attacker “tells us by that letter that he considers this his final act,” Hallgren said.

The sword’s sheath was found inside a car parked near the school, Haraldsson said.

None of the victims have been identified by authorities.  However, a local newspaper cited relatives as saying those who died were 20-year-old Lavin Eskandar, a mentor at the school, and Ahmed Hassan, a 15-year-old student.

The wounded student’s condition had improved Friday and he was considered stable, a spokeswoman for the Norra Älvsborgs Länssjukhus hospital said; and the 41-year-old teacher was in “serious but stable” condition.

when thinking only in terms of physical violence... you're right.

but there's more than just physical:

www.gov.nl.ca/VPI/types/index.html

  1. Physical violence;
  2. Sexual violence;
  3. Emotional violence;
  4. Psychological violence;
  5. Spiritual violence;
  6. Cultural violence;
  7. Verbal Abuse;
  8. Financial Abuse; and,
  9. Neglect

add all instances of those up...

and it's no longer "tiny"

with all the focus on scary black gun massacres, there's no tangible progress being made on fixing the underlying cause.

I dream in my lifetime uhmericans will come to realize hezbollah, hamas, and isis gain followers by helping society AND the only way to defeat them is to perform greater good.

the average person is 8 times more likely to be murdered by a cop than a radical terrorist
