Colorado fire devastation 'heartbreaking,' Obama says

President tours area where 347 homes were lost; body found overnight is first fatality

President Barack Obama toured a devastated neighborhood in Colorado Springs, Colo., on Friday, praising the courage of fire crews and calling it heartbreaking to see so many homes destroyed.

Obama toured the Mountain Shadows subdivision, which saw the worst damage, stopping at times to talk to fire crews.

"This has been a devastating early fire season for Colorado," he told reporters with him, and "heartbreaking for these families" who lost their homes.

Obama earlier signed a federal disaster order to release more resources.

One of my daughters and her family lost everything in the Labor Day Bastrop Fire last fall, so I feel for all those affected by the Colorado fire.  Thankfully, my kids did get out with their lives!

My children have still not begun to build a new home although they are living back in the land in a temporary trailer.  They also got very proactive in using the burned timber which they were told was not good for anything. They were told this by the TX Forest Service. Don't always believe what you are told by a governmental agency!

First they arranged the first Log Pull ever in the Lost Pines TX area to get the cut timber to the road.  Then they got a convoy together to get the burned timber to a lumber yard.  See the video for that trip.

News story about my children and the journey after the fire.

There are other videos about the entire process of getting those burned pines to the mill and back to the land.  Just click on the MorzArtOriginalz link.

I live in TX.  Believe me, for asthmatics, not only those in CO are suffering.

I spent a good part of my growing up years in Colorado, as my family on both sides is from there -- Colorado Springs on my Dad's side.

Way back when I was in the Boy Scouts, those of us who got up the earliest would sometimes roust the others out of bed by running round, sticking our heads in their tents and yelling, "Wake up and piss, the world's on fire!"

Seems to be literally the case in some those places now.

I live in Colorado. We have a drought cycle every 40 years and so. Most notably we had a severe drought in the 1930's that led, partially, to the Dust Bowl.  Another factor leading to the Dust Bowl was poor soil management which encourged the breaking up of the prairie for agriculture without understanding the land or the environment.

The current wild fires, like the Dust Bowl, are grim reminders that we cannot be cavalier about this land or the weather of the middle United States.

For those who have faith, no explanation is neccessary.
For those who have no faith, no explanation is possible.
