I just ran across this at msn.com@ msn trending newsTeacher has Entire Class Slap Child
good old Texas--I'm sorry--I'm not good with links, but I'd appreciate help.
It appears that one child had been accused of being a bully, so the teacher had all of the other children in his kindergarten class line up and slap him. He was hit twice by each chicld; his friends didn't want to, but the teacher made them. His mother did not find out until weeks after the  incident took place. The teacher has been fired.
I guess she figured that as long as she didn't actually hit the kid herself, she could intimidate the rest of the students into keeping their mouths shut. Even if the child had indeed been a "bully", this particular punishment-pain plus humiliation seems way over the top.
No mention was made if she would be charged with anything...but she has no business being a teacher.

Edit:  News Link with a video.

Absolutely the right decision to fire her. Now, don't misunderstand me, I loathe bullies. But this has to be about the worst way of dealing with the problem that I've ever heard.

Here's a link, now.msn.com/now/0618-class-slaps-bully.

One teacher using her bully pulpit lost her job and now faces criminal charges. A teacher at Salinas Elementary School in Texas was fired after she had her kindergarten line up and slap a child. The unidentified teacher, who has been charged with a misdemeanor, allegedly had her class of 24 line up and takes turns slapping a boy who had been accused of bullying. Each classmate reportedly struck him twice. The incident occurred in early May, but the boy's mother said she was informed weeks later. "He had friends in that class, and friends didn't want to hit him, but the teacher instructed them to hit him," the boy's mother said.

And another that offers more info, abclocal.go.com/wabc/story?section=news/....

It's a good thing this teacher was fired and criminal charges should be filed against her.

When my sister and I were in middle school we went to a pretty rough school. My sister got jumped by three girls (the reason they gave: she was white) and the substitute teacher in the room did nothing other than to tell the girls that they couldn't hit my sister in the face. My mom went to the school when my sister told her and the teacher was let go (although with as mad as my mother was I'm surprised my mom didn't beat her!).

Teachers have a responsibility to keep kids safe and intervene when harm is being done to a child, NOT encourage hurting a child.

In Kindergarten???

Does a kindergartener even understand the concept of bullying?  Kids this young act out for all sorts of reasons.  (Though I think that, by high school, bullies deserve anything they get- even then, not orchestrated by a teacher!)

This is the equivalent of beating your child to get his behavior to improve.

Not to mention the poor message it sends to the children who were forced to hit the kid.

Criminal charges is damn right!

I think teachers should be given lattitude in dealing with bullies.

But I agree -- this was way, way over the top.

The teacher did a very nice job of teaching the other kids how to be bullies.

I know you believe you understand what you think I said, but I am not sure you realize what you heard was not what I meant...

Obviously a very bad idea.  I do wonder as crazy as this seems to us if this kind of thing was not alot more common in schools in the past?

I know one guy about my age who as a boy had issues with hyperactivity and the teacher had everyone line up and throw spit balls at him.  I don't think the teacher got reprimanded.

Wow...I can understand being frustrated with how to deal with a kid who is being a bully, but what horrible judgment on this teachers part!  She defintely doesn't need to be teaching...especially young children.
