In the latest diplomatic row with China, they're mad because the American embassy in Beijing has been Twittering air pollution readings. They've got a rig on the roof that monitors air pollution, and the totals are published hourly on the facility's Twitter feed.

China is furious with this, as the embassy's numbers are far worse than the official reports from the government. China is alleging that such actions are illegal in that they're interfereing with the normal flow of the Chinese government.

Anyone else thinking that China just doesn't want people to know the full deal?

As with the case of Chen Guangcheng, China's attempts to control the flow of information in the Information Age seem about as silly as King Canute's attempts to control the tide.

It is a good thing that China has so many people because soon, most of them will be employed as government censors.

I have just read the Chinese consider our lax gun laws to be violating human rights.

Funny, they were not saying that while they were exporting guns to the US before Clinton stopped the import of guns from China.

For those who have faith, no explanation is neccessary.
For those who have no faith, no explanation is possible.

My nephew was teaching in Beijing for a year, and he said the smog there was worse than in LA.  He's used to the polluted air of Pittsburgh, so he's familiar with air that feels like it needs to be *chewed*

In terms of a country being a major polluter, China certainly qualifies, with air pollution being the biggest health threat.

So, you can see why the U.S. Embassy issues pollution readings.

Sixteen of the world's most polluted cities are in China, which has also damaged the countryside so that it has doubled the amount of land area that could be called a desert, and lost nearly 3/4 of its forests, (although they are now trying to increase their forest cover).  China is the world's largest consumer of illegally harvested timber.  And they are opening up coal-fired plants every few weeks.

In fact, industrial pollution has made cancer China's leading cause of death.

But, to be fair, in recent years China has put into effect marine pollution regulations.  And they've actually put into practise a law against shops giving out free plastic bags.

Well, the Chinese pollution problems are  perhaps understandable, and not much different from those of decades past in the US and other industrialized nations.  I remember once when I was younger, driving through a paper mill town which was, shall we say, extremely odiferous.  "The smell of money" was the description from the locals.

This is quite a serious serious problem with the developing world.  How can they develop without all the environmental baggage which accompanied development in the west?

This aside, what is absurd about this incident is not the extreme pollution in China but the attempt by the government to pretend it doesn't exist.  When, the US Embassy aside, anyone with eyes and a nose can experience this for themselves. You can't censor evidence when the evidence is literally in the air.

Okay, scratch the air pollution reports.

We’ll post an accounting of the human rights violations occurring in China instead.
