Donna Summer, whom millions of fans revered as "the Queen of Disco," has died of cancer at the age of 63.  Story here.

The news comes as a surprise to those who were not aware that she was ill.  The legendary superstar was publicly active as recently as last June, when she appeared as a guest panelist on Bravo's music reality show Platinum Hit.  However, a report by TMZ, which initially broke the story, notes that those close to the singer revealed she had been trying to hide how sick she was.  A source said that Summer did not seem to be in that bad of shape two weeks ago.

Summer is survived by her adult daughters Mimi (by her first husband, actor Helmuth Sommer), Brooklyn, and Amanda (by second husband Bruce Sudano).

In addition to her status as a pioneer in the dance music genre, Summer was a 5-time Grammy winner and the first artist ever to score 3 back-to-back No. 1 double albums.  Summer was also nominated for induction into the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame in 2010.  Summer is credited with influencing stars ranging from Madonna and Michael Jackson to Beyoncé and Rihanna.  Her last album, Crayons, was released in 2008.

Disco is not my thing, but I did very much enjoy her singing, she did have a wonderful talent. I was quite shocked and saddened to hear of her passing.

May she rest in Peace

I very much agree

She was NUMBAH ONE when I was courting my wife, and we were dancing to her music.

She works hard for the money
So hard for it, honey
She works hard for the money
So you better treat her right

She works hard for the money
So hard for it, honey
She works hard for the money
So you better treat her right

I met her there in the corner stand
And wonders where she is
And it's strange to her
Some people seem to have everything
9 am on the hour hand
And she's waiting for the bell
And she's looking real pretty
She's waiting for her clientele

She works hard for the money
So hard for it, honey
She works hard for the money
So you better treat her right

She works hard for the money
So hard for it, honey
She works hard for the money
So you better treat her right

Twenty-eight years have come and gone
And she's seen a lot of tears
Of the ones who come in
They really seem to need her there
It's a sacrifice working day to day
For little money just tips for pay
But it's worth it all
To hear them say that they care

She works hard for the money
So hard for it, honey
She works hard for the money
So you better treat her right

Already knows, she's seen her bad times
Already knows, these are the good times
She'll never sell out, she never will
Not for a dollar bill
She works haaaaard

[Instrumental Interlude]

She works hard for the money
So hard for it, honey
She works hard for the money
So you better treat her right

She works hard for the money
So hard for it, honey
She works hard for the money
So you better treat her right
Alright...

I feel a little older and sadder with her passing...

I had alot of good times dancing with friends to Summer's tunes.

The "I will survive song"  We used to lip synch that one and dance around with a hair brush or something instead of a microphone.  I will never forget how we behaved and danced to that song.

her songs were so much fun.  I hope she rests in peace.

I'm so glad y'all have such good and personally significant memories of her.  Mark, I love your tribute to her.

Summer's family has scheduled a memorial for her next Wednesday, May 23, in Nashville.  It's not a public memorial; it's for family and close friends only.  Summer and her family moved to Nashville in 1994.  TMZ reports that Summer's family chose the city for her memorial because Nashville was Summer's home and always extremely close to her heart.

TMZ also reports that Summer died from complications of lung cancer.  Apparently, Summer believed she developed cancer by inhaling toxic particles after the 9/11 attack in New York City.

"I Will Survive" is sung by Gloria Gaynor.

I wanted to grow up and be Donna Summer- or one of the Pointer Sisters.

I wish she'd let more folks know of her illness before she passed.
