Sounds like my kind of place. Those sorts of conditions keep out yuppies wanting to build trophy homes.

No, those conditions keep anyone from building a home there. No one needs to keep extinct "yuppies" out of anything. They died off long ago.

My father built quite a nice home in just such a place in just that state. (Nevada)

Some of our larger cities -- such as Pheonix -- were build in the middle of deserts.

Exactly. One couple having 19 kids isn't going to offset the culmative effect of hundreds of others having only one or two.

A reasonable person wouldn't care about one, or a few, having multiple children. It's the glorification of large families that needs to change.

I've also read that the population is leveling off, or at least the growth is slowing.

Those are the famous last words several people that said the train about to hit them; was slowing down.

I didn't say population wasn't a potential problem. I was merely pointing out, it's not going to keep growing at present rates.

Also, I don't think many are trying to glorify huge families. It's a curiosity. People might enjoy following the Duggar saga as a novelty, but, honestly, how many people in the First World are all chomping at the bit to have 19 children?

I've never understood why the powers that be in America haven't gone over to socialised medicine at one time or another.  Just about every other country in the industrialised West has it, and it works.

And I've always wondered about all those pro-life people screaming about abortion.  If abortion rights were taken away, and women had to carry unwanted babies to term, just how many of those pro-life people would actually volunteer to adopt those babies?

None of them would (of the virulent "prolifers", who don't believe in abortion under any circumstances.). They are not pro-life they are pro-birth, Once the unborn are born they don't care what happens to the baby. It can be dead the minute it is born as long as the women if forced to carry it to term. It is a power and control issue not any interest in the baby.

This type only care about themselves as far as health care goes. They don't care about anyone but themselves. Which is why they are against affordable healthcare

A tyrant must put on the appearance of uncommon devotion to religion. Subjects are less apprehensive of illegal treatment from a ruler whom they consider god-fearing and pious. On the other hand, they do less easily move against him, believing that he has the gods on his side. Aristotle

And the inference that it wasn't a problem any more.

The show is a hit, many do glorify such large families.

Phoenix is near a water source. Much of Nevada is not. Is the point sinking in yet?
