So the Senate is scheduled to vote today whether to end the big tax breaks to the petroleum industry.
www.dailykos.com/story/2012/03/26/107797... A majority of Democrats (I'm told) want to end them, but the bill is getting "filibustered" by you-know-who. "Filibuster" is in quotes because it's a fake filibuster; nobody actually has to drag his butt into the well and stand there talking for X number of hours. The you-know-who's are ably assisted by a number of Democrats who refuse to go along with the rules change that would do away with the ludicrous and preposterous 60-votes-to-end-a-filibuster rule. This is an object lesson in how the man behind the curtain dupes the American public, many of whom still believe they've got a democracy, when what we actually have is a plutocratic oligarchy dressed up in democracy's clothes.

You got to have a sensational thread title, like "Should Grease Traps Be Allowed To Breed?"... that'll get you some responses.

Maybe we should open it up into a larger topic, such as "How a bill becomes a law." The thing about money is that it functions as both a lubricant and an adhesive.

Raising taxes on oil companies will result in higher gas prices. Works like this: 20 cost of tank of gas: 10 expenses, 5 taxes, ergo 5 Net Profit Tax Raised: 20 cost of tank of gas: 10 expenses, 7 taxes, ergo 3 Net Profit (Bad ) Solution: 22 cost of tank of gas: 10 expenses, 7 taxes, ergo 5 net Profit (all is fixed )

It is a bad and good thing. While 5 dollar gas will result in some folks driving less it will also increase the price of goods in the country. Public transportation will either raise its rates or cut schedules to offset higher fuel costs. The lost revenue from fuel taxes will in turn mean even fewer funds to support local infrastructure that is already crumbling. |

It needs to be much higher before it can wake up the American people to their reality.

But I'm not for artificially high prices to further a political agenda. Stealing from oil companies to run up expenses, is no different than vadalizing refineries, or drilling small holes in people's gas tanks to try to get them to support something they are not otherwise interested in. An alternative to gasoline has to be actually better and as cheap or cheaper.
