Perhaps.

But you can permanently injure, disable or kill somebody by slamming their head into the pavement just as surely as you can by shooting them.

So, in that case, the ball was back in Zimmerman's court.

One moment.....according to reports, Zimmerman says he attempted to follow the kid but lost him and was returning to his vehicle when he was accosted by Martin from behind.....

Is this the case, who knows? People have made up their minds already though and it is going to be practically impossible to have a fair trial.  Fair trials are a deserved item, are they not?

I've read there are reports of him being checked in to the hospital with a broken nose, and other cuts and lascerations.

Probably awaiting confirmation on this... as well as other details. 

Again, having worked as a reporter myself, I know getting information out of hospitals can be a real bearcat.

Following somebody is one thing.

Confronting somebody -- after following them back --  punching them in the nose hard enough to knock them off their feet and then slamming their head into a hard surface is something else entirely.

In that case, "self defense" on the kid's part would be pretty thin soup.

It seems you are hell-bent in seeing this only one way.

Here'swhat I would like to know.

How far away was he when he was shot?

How many shots were fired; how many struck the victim.?

Where was the victim hit? In front or in back.

Was he shot while running away?

Was Zimmerman standing when he fired or did he shoot while on the ground.

If Z was standing and shot the kid while he was running away, stand your ground doesn't apply.
