First they went after evolution. Now they are attacking the theory of relativity. What is next? Gravity? Does "Conservative" lunacy ever end? It’s all relative: You say Einstein is ‘Jewish science,’ I say ‘liberal conspiracy’. . . now the legendary physicist is facing a new wave of attacks, this time from conservative bloggers who say that his theory of relativity and its iconic formula, E=mc2, are part of a “liberal conspiracy.” The latest debate erupted when a website, Conservapedia, posted a definition of relativity making the charge that it was part of an ideological plot, and then added a list of counter examples it says disprove Einstein’s theories. The postings were picked up by the liberal blog TPMMuckracker and then went viral. . . . How Einstein and his theories became embroiled in America’s cultural wars is not clear. That his theories represent one of the great leaps in scientific history is. . . . . . . Schlafly’s argument against Einstein appears to conflate relativity, a theory in physics about time, space and gravity, with relativism, a philosophical argument about morality and human experience having nothing to do with physics. He points to a 1989 article by liberal law professor Lawrence Tribe in the Harvard Law Review. Now widely disseminated on the Internet, Tribe’s article uses relativity as a metaphor for understanding constitutional law. In the footnotes, Tribe thanks the man who was then the editor of the review: a law student named Barack Obama. Hence, a liberal conspiracy. . . . . . . In an effort to discredit Einstein’s theories, Schlafly provides a list of about two dozen “counterexamples.” Scientists looking at the list say many are irrelevant, some misinterpret the science and many are flat wrong. The latter category, they say, includes Schlafly’s claim that no useful devices have been “developed based on any insights provided by the theory; no lives have been saved or helped, and the theory has not led to other useful theories and may have interfered with scientific progress.” Almost everyone who has had a PET (positron emission tomography) scan in a hospital, or who has undergone radiation therapy for cancer or who has turned on a particle accelerator has used the theory of special relativity, says historian and physicist Michael Riordan, adjunct professor of physics at the University of California, Santa Cruz. If you have a GPS navigation system in your car, Einstein is guiding you, Riordan said. That E=mc2 is wrong surely would have surprised the physicists at the Manhattan Project who used it to develop the atomic bombs that destroyed two Japanese cities. “There is no controversy,” Riordan said. “The theory isn’t wrong; it’s incomplete and has refinements that might or might not be true.” . . . . . . Meanwhile, physicists are expressing mixed feelings about how to react. Several refused to comment for this story because they did not want to give Schlafly credibility. But Clifford Will, professor of physics at Washington University in St. Louis, did weigh in. “The Internet world is full of kooks and crackpots who put out all kinds of drivel. It is pointless to attempt to refute these people with evidence, because they don't believe in evidence,” Will wrote in an e-mail from Paris. “…People may not like relativity,” he wrote, “but the experimental and observational evidence that supports it is so overwhelming that it is now a fact of the universe.” www.jta.org/news/article/2010/08/17/2740... or www.jta.org/news/article/2010/08/17/2740506/einstein-jewish-liberal-conspiracy-andrew-schlafly |

I've seen this on the "Origins of Life" board. These idiots don't seem to know the difference between Relativity (in Physics), and Relatavism (in Ethics.) If Energy DOESN't equal Mass times the Speed of Light squared, then what the hell blew up over Hiroshima and Nagasaki?

Well look at it this way. I saw this when I was surfing the cable channels. Sheri is a Jehovah Witness. Watch this and remember she's busy thinking about feeding her kid, when she's making a fortune at a job that in the overall scheme of things, is worthless to society. The Bible refers to four corners of the earth. Unicorns. Giants. That the stars and planets are suspended from the vault (ceiling) of heaven. Don't forget that Da Vinci (edit: Make that Galileo) was threatened by the church with the Inquisition, if he didn't recant his claim that the earth revolved around the sun. Instead of the earth being the center of god's universe as the church claimed.Of course the 20th century Pope pardoned old Da hundreds of years after it matters and apologized so you know he's thankful for that one. The last part of this video cuts out but Barbara Walters asks Sheri about if her son asks mom is the world round and Sheri says she'll have to tell him, baby we'll have to go to the library and find out. Yeah baby, that's because mom is too stupid to have ever seen what a globe looks like. Or maybe it's just a Liberal conspiracy and that should really be a disk! Is it any wonder far right Fundy nucks object to having to face reality? They think god murdering himself to renounce the curse of sin he set upon humans himself, is love! Now that explains the inquisition. Where people were destroyed when they could feel the pain, so they could avoid god's created hell when they were dead. Yeeeah.

Most societies that degenerate into the totalitarianism of fascism begin with a purge of intellectuals and/or begin systematic educational 'corrections' that are largely propaganda or religious BS. This crap is more of the weary same. Time for everyone with an IQ above 100 to learn some self-defense and take the time to wrest control of school boards away from these neanderthals.

Well ... Galileo, but we take your meaning. The one who really gets lost in that awful narrative was Bruno, who was really burnt at the stake by the Inquisition for his holding to the heliocentric universe.

Hey, TS, the RCC DID apologize. Yeah, 400 years later, but these things take TIME to work through the bureaucracy.

I heard a piece on the radio a week or so ago, to the effect that more and more millionarie/billionaire types are supporting and donating to Democrats, even though fully cognizant that the Democrats' tax-the-wealthy policies are more likely to take money out of their pockets. Why? Precisely because of this sort of ignorant rhetoric issuing from the yahoos on the right. These are very smart dot-com guys who recognize this blatant stupidity for what it is. You hear a lot of talk about the Republicans no longer being the party of Eisenhower and Lincoln. Well, these aren't your William Buckley conservatives anymore either. |

It really scares me that in 2010 People still will not say the world is round.
A tyrant must put on the appearance of uncommon devotion to religion. Subjects are less apprehensive of illegal treatment from a ruler whom they consider god-fearing and pious. On the other hand, they do less easily move against him, believing that he has the gods on his side. Aristotle
Never discourage anyone...who continually makes progress, no matter how slow. Plato.. "A life is not important except in the impact it has on other lives" Jackie Robinson |
