Mass Shooting at US Army Base

US Army spokespersons say 9 people are dead and as many as 30 people have been wounded after a mass shooting this afternoon at Fort Hood in Texas.  A Fort Hood spokeswoman says authorities believe at least two gunmen were involved in the attacks and that one suspected shooter is now in custody.  One suspected shooter is still at large.  Stories here and here.

It's not known whether the shooters and their victims were soldiers or civilians.

The shootings reportedly began around 1:30 this afternoon (CST) at a personnel and medical processing office.  The second shooting occurred at a theater on the base where a graduation ceremony was scheduled for 2:00 this afternoon.  Additional shots were reported at a soldier's residence around 4:30 this afternoon.

A motive wasn't immediately known, and it's too soon to tell whether there is any link to battle stress or repeated deployments.

The base and area schools were on lockdown after the shooting, and all those on the Army post were asked to gather for a head count.

Obama has been briefed and the FBI is on its way to the base.

This is a developing story, by the way.

CNN has just reported there may have been more than one shooter.

There are 31 wounded and 12 dead at this point.

I'm sick.

Yeah, it's literally breaking -- and very sad -- news.

According to CNN, Fort Hood is the army's largest US post.  With about 40,000 troops, it's home to the army's 1st Cavalry Division and elements of the 4th Infantry Division, as well as the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment and the 13th Corps Support Command.  It's located near Killeen, Texas.

Fort Hood is also home to the Warrior Combat Stress Reset Program, which is designed to help soldiers overcome combat stress issues.

At least 25,000 people are at Fort Hood on any given day, an army spokesman at the Pentagon said.

One of the suspected shooters has reportedly been wounded by military police.  Both he and the suspected shooter in custody are military; I think it's being speculated that there is a third shooter.

The news broke just as I was getting ready to go to class, and when I arrived on campus I was turned away by a security guard.

One of the shootings happened at the main PX, which is less than half a mile from college; you can see one building from the other.

Given this and the location of the other shootings, I'm wondering if there wasn't at least a third shooter.

I'm fine, and one of the soldiers I know texted me about 15 minutes ago; he's fine, but the whole facility is on lockdown.

I'm glad you're OK, Ironhold.  Thanks for checking in; keep us posted.

I'd read that schools in the area were in lockdown; I'd forgotten that that would include colleges.

Killeen ISD maintains a series of nine schools on the physical property of Ft Hood - 7 elementary schools and 2 middle schools.

Supposedly most of those schools were on an early-out schedule, and so some of them might have already let out at the time the lockdown was put in place. I only got scattered details on the drive home today.

Anyway, the toll is now at 12 dead and 31+ wounded.

One of the shooters has been identified as Maj. Malik Hassan.
