It is unfortunate, but some people seem to want something to panic about. And yes TMarie LOL
A tyrant must put on the appearance of uncommon devotion to religion. Subjects are less apprehensive of illegal treatment from a ruler whom they consider god-fearing and pious. On the other hand, they do less easily move against him, believing that he has the gods on his side. Aristotle Never discourage anyone...who continually makes progress, no matter how slow. Plato.. Since the Mayans never got around to inventing the wheel or using the zero in mathematics, I think we'll be okay. Like when the comets, Harmonic Convergence, and Y2K came and went and there were a lot of generators for sale in the ads. The Third Reich was supposed to last for a thousand years. It's the sort of thing to make a great impression not only about how steady this society was, but that there was no point in trying to talk or look for problems because what would be the use in complaining when this set of circumstances will long outlast you and your petty complaints. While I don't have any superpowers, I know that if I took out all the charge cards I'm offered and spent them all to the max with the payments not due until after the Mayan Calender runs out, I'd have a great time until I had to actually pay for it when the world didn't end. When you set an end date on something so many generations ahead--like when our Sun goes nova or sucks us into a Black Hole--that I just can't fathom it and I just presume we'll have settlements on other planets by then.
"You are letting your opinion be colored by facts again." 'When I want your opinion, I'll give it to you." these are both from my father.

What does it mean when the Mayan calendar runs out?? Means it is time for the Mayans to make another calendar.

Hey now, I just purchased a 5 year calendar - good through 2014. I intend to get my money's worth too. Ya know what that Mayan calendar thing is about? It's about some guys a long time ago playing a practical joke on us. See, they figured that will all the modern conveniences we'd be enjoying by now, we'd have nothing much to worry about. So they concocted this calendar-ending scheme to scare the pants off us; get us to believing all this was gonna end in our lifetime. Probably had a good laugh over it too. And hey, it's not like we can get them back for this one. Irene.

"I came back from England last year and, man, they had me fed up with this stuff..." Mayan Calendar Runs Out at 2012 {{{shudder}}} What Happens Next...?
Hmmm...
I personally am more concerned with what happens BEFORE... My own diary runs out on 12/31/2009, I urgently need to buy a new one...

"Yes" to which... end of the world or end of a cycle?

Why should it be considered the "end of the world" rather than the end of a cycle? Most religions teach of an end time when those religions will come to fruition - a time of peace on earth. In the Christian vernacular: "God's kingdom on earth." How could that ever be if the world, according to some views, is to have a physical end? Does it make sense to think that way?
yes.
