I don't think JCO or I are insinuating that there has been nothing good about the American experience. That is waaay too extreme in the negative. But what she is talking about, IMHO, is the extreme in the other direction, the fervent belief by many that the U.S. can do no wrong. That just isn't correct if we pay attention to history and current affairs.
