hi, i go to college and one day this week i saw a women walking around in her hijab a modest pair of  shorts and a tshirt.  from my experience with muslim women i thought they were suppose to cover themselves, my aunts and cousins were long sleves and skirts or pants during the summer. i was a little confused, are muslim women allowed to wear shorts and tshirts even if they are modestly dressed?

No.  Muslims women should not wear shorts, not in public at least.   What they wear in the privacy of  their homes is different.  Muslim women are suppose to cover everything except their face, hands and feet.   Skirts, dresses or pants are suppose to come down to the ankle and blouses sleeves down to your wrists.   Clothing should also be loose and not form fitting.

But some Muslim women dress the way they want and that's between them and God.

Salaam,
Islamically we are required to dress modestly and to cover our cleavage.  The rest- headcovering etc. is cultural, but many people believe it is required.

And some women are not wearing hijab, not because they are dressing 'the way they want' but because they don't believe it is required.  They may even believe it is wrong to wear it and give this false impression of Islam.

And ......they're......ooooooooffff!!!!!!!!!!

Once again the great hijab debate.

The way it ends is that not everyone agrees.

Grace,

It would be soo boring if we all agreed..  .  I keep my opinions and my dress codes private, between me and Allah.  So far He hasn't objected to anything, although I think I would do better if I got out of my night clothes occassionally.

Anna who stays home a lot.

As some others have already posted it is evident there's a huge diversity of opinion on how to dress modestly.  I think I recall reading somewhere that a woman asked one of the few female scholars on fiqh about this, and she said that the 'legal' postion is that women should cover the body from the underarms to just below the knees, all else is technically okay.

But of course it is impossible to really know the truth in the matter from what is out there...
The Quran itself only requires women to cover their bosoms and dress modestly.

All this debate over clothing....it's really kind of absurd and humourous.....will changing our clothing really make us closer to God?  Somehow I doubt it....

I've seen some strange interpretations myself of dress code...for instance some women wear the tightest lycra type clothing, covering everything from neck to wrists, to ankles plus a hijab!
They look like they are naked, with a painted on skin....how can that be modest?

Personally, I think the point is to dress in a way that does not draw attention to yourself, especially from the opposite sex....isn't that the point?

much peace

Actually, if you read the quran in arabic, it's really clear.  Women are to cover their pockets and their genitals.  Men are to cover their genitals.  Pockets are not the same as cleavage as not all women are big enough to have cleavage, so it would be bossom.  It also says a woman should wear a cloak when traveling abroad, but only if it's convenient.  Adornments can be removed and put in a drawer, you can't do that with your hair... unless you wear a wig.
At the time, jewish women always covered their breastisis, but they also wore wigs so the sons of god or the jinn, whatev, wouldn't come down and take them....and make babies that would become men of renown....that no one ever heard of again....

I think the hijab is a cool fashion accessory when worn right.  The quran does say to look good....and cover your genitals...it's the right thing to do.
