The Nichiren school teaches the attainment of Buddhahood in ones present form in this very body through embracing the wisdom of the Lotus Sutra. This is known as the direct Buddha vehicle. Therefore it incorporates all the practices and resulting virtues accumulated by Shakyamuni Buddha since the infinite past as these are expressed and taught in the Lotus Sutra. The practice of chanting Nam Myoho Renge Kyo is known as the essential practice of embracing the wisdom of the Lotus Sutra. Chanting this phrase calls forth the Buddha nature in ones own life. Just as the human body contains all the knowledge of the universe stored within its DNA we can call forth the Buddha wisdom to become activated within consciousness by reciting the phrase Nam Myoho Renge Kyo.
