Hi, The book called The buddha, Geoff and me, brought me here. Ive considerd Buddhism for a while now, really only as the poeple involved seemed just,, well nice. Having travelled to southern asia my feelings were confirmed. But as seems typical my personal life hitting my personal rocks somehow led me to read this book. The very next book I chose to read was bizzarly related to the SAME form?type?study? of buddism so here I am needing to no more of Nichiren Buddhism.
I live in Glasgow Scotland, my city Buddhist center focus on FTWO (friends of the western order of Buddhism) and seem, although I have only visited once my Buddhism class starts end of April, to focus on meditation much much more than chanting.
I have started chanting but have no gohonzon of lotus sutra to read from is this bad????
I have to say that since chanting my life situation has defo improved!!!
So my qns...
1. Am I selfish to go for Nichiren Buddhism because it 'suits' my lifestyle?
2. Why chanting v's meditation?
3. What is the real diffenences between Nichiren and FTWO Buddhism and why?

Answers on a postcard please to........... lololol just kidding but I  guess these are heavy qns but I live my life to do good for others yet I lack the wisdom to know when enuf is enuf so I suffer as a result. I really need to see a path out but I just want to know where to look.

Thanks Gillie xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Question 1) If you don't choose a practice style that you can maintain, and that you are comfortable with, you won't continue to practice.

Question 2) Chanting IS meditation - just another form.

Question 3) I know very very little about FWBO so I can't really comment.  Nichiren Buddhism can vary quite a bit, depending on which Nichiren group you are examining.  I have some experience with some of the more widespread Nichiren groups, so I can speak to similarities and differences between them, but I have very very little knowledge of FWBO.

Hope this helps,

Thanks Gxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx[/QUOTE]Hi again, Gillee -

Personally, I like to characterize chanting as active meditation.

I would imagine that if you sincerely want to practice, that any Buddhist order would welcome you.

Nichiren practice is not all that widespread; depending on your location there may only be one or two Nichiren groups available to you, if any at all.  Some other Buddhist groups also chant; others do not.    My personal recommendation would be to visit those centers near you (both Nichiren and non) and see what fits, and what feels right to you.  Just try practicing, and see what happens.

Whatever you decide to do, good luck, and enjoy the journey!

This isnt meant to disrespect nor pose purposeful opposition to Engyo's latter statement.

Meditation is a more passive exercise than chanting; one usually calms one's mind by concentrating on a particular phrase or image. At first glance this may seem close to the practice of meditation, but actually the difference is apparent. The practice of chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo enables us to express and experience our innate Buddhahood and release the powerful energy contained within that, rather than to calm our minds or negate certain ways of thinking.

Check out this website.  There could be a SGI community center near your location.
