Last year, while visiting Poland, i came across a fascinating and harrowing story of a Jewish child who survived the Holocaust and grew up in Poland to be ordained as a priest. I investigated the story further and wrote an article. It was published today in the Jerusalem Post. www.jpost.com/Features/Magazine-Features... |

Shabbat shalom, Nahum. Be assured, we are thinking of you.
Blessed are You, HaShem, Who blesses the years.

Strange to tell....but an American won this year's International Bible Competition that took place on Israel Independence Day in Jerusalem. For the story: www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-43685... There were really two winners - but the American really had more points. The contest is one of my favorite parts of Independence Day. Rather than hold military parades every year, Israel focuses on what is unique to our country: the Bible. That sort of reminds us of why we are here. It's nice to see the contestants competing - but the most interesting part is listening to the questions and seeing what we know! The questions are introduced by short videos about significant Israelis (not necessarily famous) who actually pose the questions. There is some entertainment as well- mostly musical, between the various stages. Watching the Competition broadcast is an essential part of our Yom HaAtzmaut tradition - along with a festive meal with friends at night, a barbeque during the day and participating in special services in our synagogue. We recite Hallel - and praise G-d for granting us the "first flowers of our redemption." Despite all of Israel's problems and imperfections, it's a miracle!

Today we celebrated Jerusalem Day - the 46th anniversary of the city's unification. I attended festive prayers that included Hallel, the psalms of praise that we recite on other Jewish festivals. I also went up to the Temple Mount, along with a large group of yeshiva students who danced in a circle after we finished our visit, singing "Yibane haMikdash" - "May He rebuild the Temple." I also saw a short film clip that puts the lie to the "Arab East Jerusalem" tale of two cities: www.youtube.com/watch?v=JXSvrAe5xEM&feat... |
