I am a fan of Matisyahu's music. It's really upbeat and gets you thinking about spiritual concepts at the same time. If you listen to some of his lyrics he quotes Psalms, Talmud, and some more mystical Chasidic concepts. It is great to have a Jew being a Jew in public and not having to hide his heritage.
Another pretty good guy is the rapper Y-Love, who raps in Aramaic. |

I enjoy Joshua Nelson alot. I have most of his Mi Cammocha (sp) on my ipod to play for Shabbat I am also a fan of Six13. I love their version of Lecha Dodi. Only problem is that I have yet to figure out what verses of the song they are singing so that I can sing along.

hi, I just clicked here after taking that beliefnet quiz on what religion you are, and reform Judaism came up number 3 (after Quakers and Unitarians) on my list of 20 or whatever, and I've always been interested in learning more about Judaism...anyway, I digress..I was just explaining how I got here...I have only heard a few Matisyahu songs, on the radio and on their myspace..my favorites are "king without a crown" (the one that was a live version at Stubbs in my hometown, Austin, TX...better than the album version I think) and Jerusalem, I love that song....
I think Jewish Reggae is a really brilliant idea, and seems to be working well for him, reggae is such a great sound...I'm a crazy music buff. I find his music really inspirational and in a way that's accessible to everyone, not just Jews, but it's nice that he's bringing Jewish ideas and spirit to the masses. speaking of Jewish music...I was in the car with my mom a couple months ago and we were listening to NPR and they had on..forgive me, the only way I know how to call him is Borat's brother....I don't remember their last name...oh yeah...Sasha Coen....so that had, not him, not Borat, but his real life brother on the show and apparently he is not a comedian like his brother, but a musician. And he has put out an album of Jewish music....I don't think he sings, I think he had guest artists sing, but he plays instruments and wrote some of the songs as well as reworked some old Jewish tunes...hold on I'm looking it up in another window.... ok, it's actually a Hanukkah album (must be around the time we heard him on the radio promoting it) and it is called: "songs in the key of Hanukkah". His name is Erran Baron Cohen. I liked the sounds of a few of the clips they played on the radio (including Dreidel played in a really different way), but I could not tell from the little bit I heard how good it is, but maybe check it out. |
