All of Rabbi Aryeh Kaplan ZT"L works are simply amazing and I can't think of a better place to start. It was a no-brainier buying his books, no matter what the topic, but he especially made the Kabbalah understandable. When I was young I devoured all of Gershom Sholem ZT"L books the same way, got them as they first came out in hardcover in fact. However his works are more of a historical and academic perspective of the subject. Still, his works are also classic. |

Where to begin?
It's frustrating to have even a truncated list of books of various kinds and styles without descriptions, classifications, or recommendations. For example, what are the best beginning works in plain and simple English for someone who lacks philosophical training and knowledge of Jewish tradition? What works are best for someone with knowledge of Judaism but no philosophical training? And vice versa -- someone who is a trained philosopher but has little knowledge of Judaism? For that matter, should one begin with books or with something else? |

Well, personally -
personally, I'd recommend a solid grounding in 'Judaism' before even looking at 'kabbalah', because otherwise, it will be completely and totally misconstrued. Scholarly treatments, though - most people think Gershom Sholom's work is solid.

Thanks for the recommendation. As a matter of fact, I have "Main Currents in Jewish Mysticism," and have attempted it several times. Perhaps I should try again. As I recall it, it's written from the outside -- it's a description of historical belief systems, without much to make those systems attractive. I'm looking for a work that's written from the inside, by someone who understands so well that he can reveal the heart of it, authentically. I'm not looking for a popularization or a simplification, exactly.
I have a basic Jewish education (admittedly a long time ago) and have studied the Bible for many years. I understand that, traditionally, that's nowhere near enough to study Kabbala, but that's where I am. |
