What denials could we come up with for this article?  

The neuroscientists theory is that it is due to altitude.  Wait, would we really need to deny that one? It's not like we would ever assert that non-Mormons are more elevated than us.  Darned, this response stuff is tricky when thinking is involved.

This is actually something we've hashed out a few times here on BNet.

Nobody quite knows for sure what's behind it, but a number of potential contributing factors have been identified, including the region's high altitude (higher-altitude locations have a higher incidence rate of suicide, possibly due to the low oxygen affecting the brain's chemistry) and the blase attitudes taken by various leaders (both religious and secular) towards alcoholism and substance abuse.
