President Obama has removed the US Embassy to the Vatican and cosolidated it with our Embassy to Italy.
While I have had First Amendment concerns over US ties to the Vatican, it is a sovereign state which has been friendly to our own Government.
Why would the Obama Administration be so discourteous to a friendly power?

Hi,

Well it certainly isn't a compliment or even a civil gesture.  Obama has done so many things which have been a slap to Christians. His actions certainly speak louder than his words.

Sorry, I've been away & never got the details.  Has he attrmpted an explanation of his actions?

No, the embassy was not closed, just relocated to save money and improve security.  No reduction in staff or mission.

The Vatican is a sovereign state, separate from Italy, do they not deserve to have a US embassy there?
What security concern would there be to warrant this withdrawal fro the Vatican city?

From the article linked above

" Neither Obama, nor the State Department, are planning on permanently closing the U.S. Embassy to the Holy See – also known as the Vatican. What is happening, however, is the building the embassy is currently using is being moved to a property closer to Vatican City.

Last week, the State Department announced it was moving its freestanding Vatican embassy to a compound shared with the U.S. Embassy in Italy and the U.S. Mission to the United Nations. On a call with reporters, a senior State Department official said the purpose for the move was to save money and increase security.

In response, former ambassadors to the Holy See – like Jim Nicholson, who served under President George. W. Bush, and Raymond Flynn, who served under President Bill Clinton – cautioned in interviews with other news outlets that the move from a freestanding building without a compound would signal a diminishing relationship between the U.S. and the Vatican.

"It's turning this embassy into a stepchild of the embassy to Italy," Nicholson told the National Catholic Reporter.

Conservative Catholic activists then seized on the news and began assailing the Obama administration with claims of being "anti-Catholic."

But in an interview with CNN, a spokesman for the Vatican said the move was well within the Holy See's requirements for embassies and that relations with the United States are far from strained."

The U.S. Embassy to the Vatican was never in Vatican City.  It will actually be closer now than before.

from the article linked in the first post

Personally I have seen that Obama has given numerous sneaky slaps at Christians in the name of politically correct.

"The Obama administration, in what’s been called an egregious slap in the face to the Vatican, has moved to shut down the U.S. Embassy to the Holy See — a free-standing facility — and relocate offices onto the grounds of the larger American Embassy in Italy.

The new offices will be in a separate building on the property, Breitbart reported.

And while U.S. officials are touting the relocation as a security measure that’s a cautionary reaction to last year’s attacks on America's facility in Benghazi, several former American envoys are raising the red flag.

It’s a “massive downgrade of U.S.-Vatican ties,” said former U.S. Ambassador James Nicholson in the National Catholic Reporter. “It’s turning this embassy into a stepchild of the embassy to Italy. The Holy See is a pivot point for international affairs and a major listening post for the United States, and … [it’s] an insult to American Catholics and to the Vatican.”

Mr. Nicholson — whose views were echoed by former envoys Francis RooneyMary Ann GlendonRaymond Flynn and Thomas Melady — also called the justification for closing the existing facility a “smokescreen,” Breitbart reported.

“That’s like saying people get killed on highways because they drive cars on them,” he said in the report. “We’re not a pauper nation … if we want to secure an embassy, we certainly can.”

Moreover, the existing facility has “state of the art” security, he said.

Mr. Flynn, meanwhile, said the administration’s announcement reflects a hostility toward the Catholic Church.

“It’s not just those who bomb churches and kill Catholics in the Middle East who are our antagonists, but it’s also those who restrict our religious freedoms and want to close down our embassy to the Holy See,” he said in the National Catholic Reporter. “[There’s no] diplomatic or political benefit to the United States” from the relocation at all, he added.

Catholic Vote, a publication for the Church community, called the move “an unmistakable slap in the face” that clearly communicates that the United States cares little for the diplomatic facility.

And Mr. Nicholson went on, as Breitbart reported: “It’s another manifestation of the antipathy of this administration both to Catholics and to the Vatican — and to Christians in the Middle East. This is a key post for intermediation in so many sovereignties but particularly in the Middle East. This is anything but a good time to diminish the stature of this post. To diminish the stature of this post is to diminish its influence.”
