We found out yesterday we’ve got another granddaughter on the way. She’s due in September.  But she seems to have a little kidney problem and may need some surgery after she is born. A few prayers for her would help.

I would like to brag about the youth in our Ward. One member of our Ward was sighted for their house being an eyesore to the neighborhood as the paint had mostly fallen off all of the wood frame. With the member ill for many years he has been unable do anything around the house, much less get on a ladder with half a foot. When the ward found out about the City issuing the citation they got together and for the last two Saturdays the youth and other members have scraped and repainted the exterior of the house and cleaned up the weeds as necessary. There still are a lot of good people around in this tough old world.

I almost missed this brag about one of Burbanks best.

President Obama honored Rebecca Mieliwocki as the 2012 National Teacher of the Year, saying she is “the definition of above and beyond.”

Yes, I remember.  Tell him congratulations from us all on becoming a Deacon.

Keep up the good work Jesse.

Thanks WWA, it simply takes time and a willingness to serve. Roughly half of our Club are retired school teachers or school administrators so they know what the needs are there. The girls basketball tournament usually has around 19 teams. Sometimes more or less so it take a full week to go through all of the playoffs. Our club sponsors the tournament and we raise a good bit of money which all but the $1000 goes back to the school sports program. Then we give the $1000 back to a student the coaches pick. All of those we give a scholarship to from the 10 academic, 1 sports or the 5 meet the challenge scholarships agree to continue their education. What I find neat, is that in all of our activities, all of the club members get involved. We simply could not do anything without all of the great people in our community. I can tell you that it is not just us LDS that know how to serve, but all good people who see a need. I must also note as we have begun to set up and promote our golf tournament, for the 25 year, it is all of the community businesses that buy adds, provide the 100+ golfers, provide food, items for the silent auction,  provide the 2012 Camero for the  "hole in one" prize and other goodies that make everything work. So I simply say that people are great.

At  the last meeting of our Optimist Club we awarded three $500 “Meet the Challenge” scholarships to students who had been “at risk” to complete their High School education. These students will graduate this June. All are planning on continuing their education.

We then presented our annual “Bill Flora” $1000 athletic scholarship to a youth who the rest of his team called “coach on the floor.” He will continue his learning at San Diego State University.

The money raised for the “meet the challenge scholarships was from our annual golf tournament and the money for the sport scholarship came from our annual girl’s invitational basketball tournament.

Bill Flora was a long time High school coach and a club member.

Lone Peak graduates McKenna Fox andJustin  Hamilton have had a significant impact in their respective disciplines  at the next level this season.

At the U.S. Air Force Academy, freshman midfielder Fox earned the Rookie of  the Year award, as announced earlier this month by women's soccer coach Larry  Friend.

Fox started all 19 games and led the Falcons with seven goals and 17 points.  Her seven goals were the most by an individual Falcon since 2001 and the most by  a freshman since 1997.
