By "consensus of opinion" I mean opinions which are held by the majority of scholars in the field of biblical research.

The same is true in science and human sexuality.  A scientist who rejects Darwinian evolution or a psychiartist who embraces reparative therapy for homosexuality would be considered a "quack".

Dr Ehrman made the cover of Newsweek with an article about the historical Jesus.  Nothing news but still interesting: http://www.christculturenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/Newsweek_Jesus2012Cover.jpg

Here is Ehrman's full article from Newsweek.

i read, enjoy, and respect Ehrman's writings.  He makes valid scholarly points...over and over and over again.

I found this article, perhaps because of space limitations, to be somewhat weak in that he didn't successfully link his opening narrative about the myths in the Proto-Gospel of to the birth narratives in the canonical Gospels. Most of us here could fill in the blanks.

There are several critiques of this article on the web by fundamentalists. One in particular by Albert Mohler from the Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville was interesting. After reviewing most of Ehrman's article point by point, Mohler concludes his review with this damning slam-dunk:

"Readers should note carefully that it is Newweek that is going out of print and not the New Testament."

Even there ... though technically correct ...  Mohler is fundamentally incorrect: Newsweek will continue online.

Al Mohler is an exclusivist, Calvinist Southern Baptist; a son of the deep South and the product of a life-long rightwing Baptist upbringing.  He has a history of vitriolic antipathy against any religion except reactionary evangelical sects.

He's not on my Christmas card list.

As with many on the A/E Board, Bart Ehrman is a favorite of mine.  I've read a number of his books and found them factual, scholarly researched, and eminently readable.
