Some of you may be interested in reading the Disciples Peace Fellowship blog on violent political speech, of particular relevance in the aftermath of the shooting of Congresswoman Gabrielle Gibbons and others in Arizona: www.dpfweb.org/dpf-blog/2011/1/11/fruit-...

Thanks for sharing this, Mitchel! A good read. I'll be sharing the link on Facebook.

May the good Lord be with, and comfort, the victims and their families.

Thanks, Mitchell. I just saw this link, and am in full agreement with the DPF on this.

However, the comments made afterward disturb me greatly. Whoare these people? They don't look the Disciples I have known and loved over the last 56 years.

I was already planning on being at the GACC in Nashville. Now I am more committed than ever to vote in support of this resolution should it come to the Assembly floor.

It seems that some of those who made comments didn't actually read the article with any care. Instead they allowed themselves to rant about things the article actually didn't say. For one, it didn't say the shooter Jared Loughner was right-wing or inspired by the right-wing. It only said that the shooting was somehow political, stating what should be obvious, and that the hostile atmosphere of our time was likely a factor of some sort. Neither did the article -or the resolution for that matter- point only to conservatives as guilty of inflammatory, violent rhetoric but also pointed to the Left. Yes, it names Glenn Beck. But he is in a class by himself as far as violent, provocative speech and fear-mongering goes. Certainly there is no equivalent on the Left who goes on and on, day after day. And Beck's influence on   Byron Williams, intercepted by the police on his way to kill people at a progressive organization, is not just a matter of speculation. He clearly stated Beck inspired him.  The defensiveness of some of the posters is unjustifiable. The article was balanced and the issue is real.

Mitchel, I read it, and posted a response; let's see if the editor posts my response. That said, it's interesting how "cultural" our people are. I see it in the church of Christ and independents, as well: On the Christian Standard website, I see posts about how "George W. Bush is a Christian, and Obama is a Muslim." and on church of Christ sites, I have personally been stunned to read pro-War jingoism (Brother Lipscomb must be rolling over in his grave.) and parroting lines about "Libs is anti-God and pro-abortion." Do you recall, Mitchel, when our Gen'l Ass'y and Gen'l Board pussy-footed around the Ind'y proposed resolutin and tabled the DFP resolution. I recall somebody on the disciples.org website calling the words from Brother McGarvey about killing a fellow Christian, in war, and how his words were "hurtful."  I do not believe that the poster even had a clue who Brother McGarvey was; in their mind, he was probably a "Muslim socialist." Our people are in trouble.

*******

"Wesley told the early Methodists to gain all they could and save all they could so that they could give all they could. It means that I consider my money to belong to God and I see myself as one of the hungry people who needs to get fed with God’s money. If I really have put all my trust in Jesus Christ as savior and Lord, then nothing I have is really my own anymore."

The violent rhetoric just keeps coming. And it is not all rhetoric.

Here we have a dimwitted politician "joking" about killing immigrants:  www.cnn.com/2011/POLITICS/03/17/kansas.r...

Here we find those who have actually done it: azstarnet.com/news/local/crime/article_6...

The rightwingers who responded to the DPF blog article and claimed that the violence to be concerned about all comes from the Left, can't produce comparible evidence. All they have is drummed up trivia from Fox News and the fantasies of Glenn Beck.
