I see that this particular forum is pretty quiet. Anyway, to answer my question: no. My parents and I attended a high Anglican church named St. Edward's in Richmond, BC, the church building being made of log wood like a log cabin. We left the church permanently while I was still in Sunday School and still a young child. We returned to that church at least once for the Christening of a child of my sister's. Aside from that, I went to different churches for weddings I was invited to and also during a vacation in England. It wasn't until the late 1990s that a person whom I knew casually invited me to church, Blessings Evangelical Bible Church, in Vancouver. I was baptized into the faith some time after accepting the Lord Jesus Christ into my life and attended that church for many years until just recently when I felt compelled by circumstances to leave the lower mainland and come to Okanagan Falls for a fresh start. I tried three different denominations: high Anglican, Catholic and finally United Church and it was the United Church that welcomed me the most and whom I felt led to join (though I had initially felt led to attend the high Anglican church). So I attend regularly now, have my own "personalized" box of tithe envelopes, and have recently stepped up to read the scripture for the service. I thank the Lord that He has led me to two very good churches. GOD bless you all!

No.
Like almost all francophone Quebeckers, I was Roman Catholic.
I discovered the United Church 9 years ago and I am now an active member of my French-speaking congregation. |

I've only been part of the United Church for about the last 20 years. I grew up in Pennsylvania (where there aren't any United Church if Canada congregations). Born into the Evangelical United Brethren church, which became part of the United Methodist church. Both of these streams of spirituality in Canada are part of the United Church.
You are a unique, special individual, just like everyone else.

Thank you for sharing. The United Church of Canada does have a unique history. It was interesting to read the church's brochures after my first visit with them. GOD bless you, |

I am still attending my local united church though I confess that some things have come to light that have me a bit worried. I knew from their pamphlets that there might be areas that I might have discomfort with but I continued to attend due to the people there and my sense that this was the church God led me to. I've also attended one service and several bible study nights at an Oliver "Word of Life" church and found that even more of a blessing in many ways. The things that led me to feel some discomfort are: the church's position on marriage and relationships between those of the same gender, the songs are not familiar to me for the most part (but I've tried to keep an open mind towards that), plus more recently I noticed the tendency towards "more inclusive" language which is really more of a distraction than anything. Changing "men" to "men and women" or "people", in a song or substituting GOD for "Him" or His and finally a song that appeared to ascribe the word Her to God were more recent examples of things that stood out to me. I "kept my peace" when this occurred and in fact, I offered the solution of "family" to stand in for "brothers" but not out of misguided intentions but merely for the fact that family of God is what we're supposed to be. I realize that changing song lyrics is hardly a "deal breaker" and hardly the most important concern, therefore I am continuing to attend this church, my "home church" though I think the Oliver church might be a better one for me... Peace to you all. |
