I've been posing this question to a few different faith communities and would like to hear what the UCC folks have to say. How would you describe the purpose of music in worship and what styles of music do you find most effective?

The purpose of music in worship I believe is to draw us into the mystery of God and to make a joyful noise unto the Lord. Many diverse styles can be incorporated into worship perfectly without sacrificing the beauty of the service. My favorite styles include African American spirituals, classical hymns, Gregorian chant, Gospel and Taize. Worship should be a union of heart, mind and soul. Worship is a participation of all people in the service whether it be laypeople, the liturgists, choir or ministers. Worship should give us the food and nurturance we need to do the work of God in the world
