http://www.courant.com/news/local/state … 3579.story An update on the East Haven Priest who took his Parishoners concerns seriously (re racial profiling, harassment by the Police) and decided to video tape the Officers actions one day when they entered a Hispanic store. Bravo to the people for bringing their concerns to the Justice Dept.! Wherever this type of racial harassment occurs, we must speak out against it as Catholic Christians. God bless Sandy

Wonderful! Something good came out of something bad. My prayers to the priest and the community which he is standing up for. |

Charges against the priest were dropped. I still haven't read anything that gives vailidity to the charges paishioners made against the police. Cops can and do harrass. Maybe this was racial profiling and maybe it wasn't. The other day I was telling my daught6er about this thread and she made a good point: our local police officers are not well-paid and most aren't. Today most cops are not even allowed to accept a free cup of coffee. The local cops in my community are "hell on wheels" but they keep this community free of speeders, those who drink and drive and drug traffickers. Our community has people who are Asian-American, Hispanic-American and the rest of us mutts. Sandy, I'm still not certain about why this story was posted here. Are we to assume this priest was some sort of hero? We don't know what was going on. Some here got their feathers ruffled when I asked if there was drug cartel trouble. I didn't say there was, I just mentioned it as a possibility. As we pointed out East Haven is not a WASP community and it is just off an interstate hwy.

Hi Sandy, I used to live in this town in CT. Sadly, a lot of racist people live there. This is not the 1st time the police dept. in this town has gotten into trouble for racial profiling. This town has a long history of corruption. But, also, the crime rate has sky rocketed in recent years. So, who is to say? I get mixed reaction regarding this from local Catholics I know. The town and the neighboring city, where the priest's parish is located, has had a huge influx of hispanic immigrants. The parish which was built by Italian immigrants years ago is now predominantly Spanish.

Cove Thanks for the input. Often we need to know a locale or have input from it to have any idea of what is going on. Too often news stories and the Internet do not give a real picture. Towns and cities with long histories of corruption create special problems. I live in one of the few truly large counties in Georgia and my city is safe because of over-zealous cops. Another city in this county is overrun with drug violence, mainly Mexican. This is the bald truth, complete with gruesome murders. My daughter and family had to sell their little starter house there because of the violence not far away. She and I used to laugh at the sign on a convenience store marquee advertising buscuits and gravy and cappuchino--the owner was murdered. Jane
