Hi, everyone:

I'm not a member of your church, but have a question that I hope someone can help me with.

Do the Disciples of Christ as a denomination promote tithing or do Disciples tend to focus more on making freewill offerings?

If tithing is promoted, does the tithing collected remain in the local congregation or does it go to help fund denominational ministries?

I know of no DoC church that requires a tithe or ten percent or a percentage of income.  Stewardship drives are held in the fall, to faciliate a budget for the church, esp. larger city or suburban congregations, and pledges are made during October or November as part of a stewarship month.  The congregation generally has a portion of its offerings going to the regional and general church levels.

"Wesley told the early Methodists to gain all they could and save all they could so that they could give all they could. It means that I consider my money to belong to God and I see myself as one of the hungry people who needs to get fed with God’s money. If I really have put all my trust in Jesus Christ as savior and Lord, then nothing I have is really my own anymore."

Thanks, mecdukebec.

On the pledges; is is customary for the congregation to recommend a pledge amount for each household, or does each household determine what they feel they can reasonably contribute and pledge that amount?

I don't ever remember being asked for a specific amount or percentage.  I do remember the pastor bringing out that one guy (or a couple of times, elderly lady) known affectionately--though secretly--by church members as 'THE HAMMER' to tell the congregation that the overall pledge level was inadequate.

I can't imagine any DoC congregation getting into guidelines, bullying tactics (though 'THE HAMMER' could possibly fit that category), etc.

My church pretty much lets households determine what they can afford to give. But when we joined, the minister told us someone from the stewardship committee would visit with us to talk about giving; the meeting never happened, though. And that was just as well -- for most of our time there, we had so little income that we could barely afford to give anything. That was one reason I gave so much of my "time and talents."
