So, what are all of you doing to mark the season of Lent?  Due to a major snow/wind storm last night and today and the fact that we live out in the country which was in a perpetual "white-out" situation all day, we didn't make it to Ash Wednesday services for the first time in many, many years.  Therefore, my start to Lent was a bit off-putting to say the least.  So, tonight, I'm going to do the Confession from the new hymnal and add some prayers for the tornado victims down south.  Otherwise, our church is reading and discussing the Gospel of John this season, so I'll be participating in that, plus some extra devotional time.  I'm not really too good with fasting 'though I plan to cut back on snacks. As I work with the poor all week long, I will have to see where I can help in some area I don't normally.  What are your plans?

I did attend Ash Wednesday services last night, and I was honestly very moved. Lent seems to be a very emotional church season for me.

We will be attending mid week services this Lenten season, but they are a little different than what I am used to. We will be having a family style dinner and devotional in the fellowship hall in lieu of the traditional sanctuary services. We did this for Advent and it worked out well.

I had the opportunity this year to do things a bit differently.  Usually, I'd be attending evening services at my own church.  But, I'd seen mention that the local Episcopal cathedral was having their choir sing Durufle's "Requiem" during their service.

I've performed the work in concert, and had been deeply moved by it.  Experiencing it in a worship setting, however, resulted in a service that was incredibly moving.  The choir sang wondefully.  The work as very well suited to the day, and to the environment of the church.  And, since I had sung it, I followed along particularly during the Agnus Dei, sung during Holy Communion. The Liturgy, including the Imposition of Ashes, was nearly identical to ours, and was easy to follow because of that.

All in all, it was an experience very compatible with my faith, and very appropriate for the day.

I realize it's been quite some time since I've posted anything--a year or so, I'd say--and about as long since I've checked the boards.  Even so, I thought I'd throw in my 2 cents worth on Lenten practices.

I'm not eating meat or eggs.  The only animal product I'm consuming is dairy, except on Sundays, natch.  I'm also doing devotions from both a "normal" schedule and from a specific Lenten devotional.  Extra prayer time, sometimes using things like the Jesus Prayer.  I'm going through clothes to find ones I don't need anymore to give to charity, and I'm volunteering one night to man the door for my church's 2-week turn as a homeless shelter.

A lot of people who know what I do think I'm a bit of an odd duck, but I like feeling like I'm proactive in living my faith, and Lent is an excellent time of year for that.  Helps me feel like I'm balancing all the mess-ups with some positive action.

I recently joined the Lutheran ELCA Church and started Posting while you were on your sabbatical - Welcome Back !!

During my New Member Class, I had the feeling all proactive odd ducks at my Church were welcome and appreciated. Keep Posting - we need some "spicing up" !!

I admire your "living my faith" and recognizing Lent. Of course, my excuse of being too busy to do much during Lent is no excuse at all. I'm learning and your example is helpful for me.
Thanks,
CA

Thanks, CA.  I'm glad you found us in the ELCA.  My own new member class wasn't too far back.  Keep on trying...it's all any of us can do.
