I'm wondering if anyone's congregation has gotten into this ELCA Bible study program, or if anyone is pursuing it independently.
I was on the ELCA website yesterday trying to make some sense of the webpage, and I found it very disorganized and confusing. I also couldn't find any resources on how to approach reading the Bible in general; just studies on discrete sections of Scripture; to borrow a phrase, I didn't find a lot of there there. I found the whole thing very disappointing, especially since my partner wants to start studying the Bible, and I was hoping this would be a good toe-dipping exercise. The "Book of Faith" program and ELCA plan to emphasize Bible study among laity hasn't been discussed at all in our congregation (which is pretty detached from Higgins Road anyway.) Am I missing something on the web page, or the program? What are your impressions? |

I too am interested in that study, but find not that many know about it.
Can you post a question on the website you were on? I will check out our synod elca website. I do know it was discussed at an assembly this past summer. That is how I heard about it, reading some of the personal reply of the delegates who attended. That study was mentioned. Maybe we can find out. It should be easier to get info. |

[/QUOTE] At my church we are using the Mark Allen Powell, "The Gospels", as a guide to the New Testament. It is really great for those "thinking folks' as it takes a more scholarly, non- literalist, non proof texting, approach to the Gospels. It is from Fortress Press. |

At our parish we too are using a Mark Allen Powell study. Although not just the gospels. It's how to interpret the bible from a Lutheran perspective. It' been great. One of the best studies I've been through.
I too was disappointed at the "Book of Faith" web site. |

Sounds interesting. I love studies that promote a lot of discussion. I will have to look that one up.

Hey, Mike -- what's the name of your study? Is it available via the ELCA website?
I love the Select Media Resources...sadly, too little time and money to really dig into all the coursework I'd like to. |

Hi tawonda,
I believe it is called "Interpreting the Bible from a Lutheran Perspective". I'm sorry I don't have more detail. Our Pastor said he came across this and thought it would be a good way for us to get a start on our little piece of the Book of Faith Program. It is a DVD, workbook course. We use the DVD, but our Pastor comes up with his own study guide. Due to our limited time on Sunday mornings we watch a half of a lesson, then discuss what was said. Then we pick up where we left off the next week. I have to say, I am very impressed with this course and would highly recommend it. |

tawonda,
I also found the Book of Faith webpage vague. It looks like a few scattered studies, but nothing comprehensive. Seems more like cheerleading for a CWA action, with enough content to make people think something's happening. I was hoping my congregation would use Akaloo for adult education, but they decided to just use it for the kids. Oh well. |
