Color me clueless: I didn't even know there was an Occupy Faith. (Skimpy website but there are Occupy Faith sites for some states and cities.) What do folks here know about Occupy Faith and what do you think about it? I came across this article today. Occupy Faith announced yesterday that it's planning a 62-mile pilgrimage next month from St. Paul's Cathedral in London to Canterbury Cathedral. The purpose of the pilgrimage is to protest "unjust economic systems in the 21st century." I gather that the very fact that Occupy Faith made the announcement from St. Paul's - with the permission of cathedral authorities - is relatively huge, as there was a 4-month long demonstration last year outside the cathedral involving clergy and (I guess) Occupy Faith or other Occupy members. Members of the Anglican, Catholic, United Reform, Quaker and Methodist churches will be participating. They'll be walking along with Jews, Muslims, Sikhs, and Buddhists. The pilgrims will stay in churches or camp on open land, according to Occupy Faith. Varinder Singh from the Sikh Turban Campaign, commented: “People of faith have always played a vital part in bringing social change – whether it was campaigning to end slavery or apartheid – or helping the poor and the sick. We believe that faith groups are a progressive force for change and are instrumental in highlighting the economic and social inequalities that exist today. We hope that all communities will support this initiative.” The Rev. Kevin Snyman from the United Reformed Church in Wales said he felt there was also a strong spiritual dimension in the pilgrimage. “We are at a very exciting stage in history. I believe we are in a spiritual battle at the moment … Politicians come to power with good intentions but they cave in. What we are doing here is shining the light of prayer on the injustices taking place in the world.” Your thoughts?

I note that a search of "Mormon" turned up nothing. I'd like to think that means we're smart enough not to get entangled with the farce that the whole Occupy movement has become. |

It occurs to me that the problem with the original "Occupy" movement is that, while it is clearly against certain things, it is not very clear at all what it is for. Maybe a Christian occupy movement might be able to provide that "for": in accord with what Jesus had to say about money, wealth, and so on. |

Yes indeed, Jesus did say... "You can not serve God and mammon." Personally, I see that as one of several fatal flaws in Conservative politics... others would be their devotion to military power, the love of guns and the nobility of government/business partnerships. Even so, when I consider how things might change if the Publican Party really took Jesus and His warning about mammon seriously... I must admit that I can not even imagine a world like that. That having been said... I do not see anything happening in the Occupy movement that would make anything better. It is nothing but a thinly disguized anarchist communist front full of delusional unemployed daydreamers. ~ Theophilus |
