The 77-year-old Crossan has built on the seminar's mission by writing a series of best-selling books on Jesus and the Apostle Paul. With his silver Prince Valiant haircut and his pronounced Irish accent, he's also appeared on documentaries such as PBS's "From Jesus to Christ: The First Christians" and A&E's "Mysteries of the Bible."

I came across this article, John Dominic Crossan's 'blasphemous' portrait of Jesus, on CNN today and thought about this forum.  It is a long article.  Any thoughts?

ALL Academic Scholars in ANY Field of Study must contend with the "Publish-or-Perish" Fate-Reality ...

Simply re-working PAST Studies and agreeing with one's Teachers and with THEIR Teachers and with The Received Tradition ... doesn't sell many Books or get a lot of Recognition ...

So the PRESSURE toward some "kind" of Originality and ATTENTION-getting is HUGE ...

SOME of that Feature propels the Recent Biblical-Historical Study Mania (see: the SPATE of Made-for-TV Docu-Show-Movies on "Discovery Channel" and "The History Channel"... AND The Dan Brown "Books," etc.) ... If you don't have a lot to say, you've got to SPECULATE -- the more out-landishly, the more profitably ... Controversy attracts Readers and Viewers, and so, Corporate Sponsors ...

Publishers and Publicists LOVE Controversy, since that brings Public Attention ... and Controversy is NOT generated by quiet careful-ness spoken and written with all the REALISTIC "Caveats" ...

So a Guy like Crossan  -- OF  COURSE  -- loves to be -- and is -- taken as THE Authority on The (so-called) "Historical Jesus of Nazareth" as compared and contrasted -- of course, unfavorably -- with The Proclaimed "Christ of Faith" of The Tradition ...

For those of us who have grown up for  DECADES  in full Appreciation of Historical-Critical Scientific Studies (not least because we've actually DONE The Studies ourselves) none of this is anything NEW ...

What IS New is The Hype ...
